King of Prussia, PA - Construction is scheduled to begin Tuesday, November 29, on a $5.2 million project to replace the structurally-deficient College Avenue bridge over SEPTA railroad tracks and the adjacent culvert over Cobbs Creek in Haverford Township, Delaware County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced.
PennDOT's contractor will work over the next year to replace the two-span concrete encased steel beam bridge with a one-span composite pre-stressed concrete box beam structure and construct a new precast reinforced concrete arch culvert. The project is scheduled to finish in November 2017.
The project also includes improvements to the traffic signals at the intersection of College Avenue and Haverford Road, and the addition of left turn lanes on College Avenue at this intersection.
During construction, College Avenue will be closed and detoured. Motorists will follow Cooperstown Road, Ardmore Avenue and Haverford Avenue to travel around the bridge closure.
The new structure over SEPTA tracks will be 42 feet wide and 58 feet long. It will have two 11-foot travel lanes and a 10-foot left turn lane. It will also have a five-foot shoulder on the west side of the structure and two-foot shoulder on the east side.
The new concrete arch culvert will be 42 feet wide and 24 feet long. It will have two 11-foot travel lanes and a 10-foot painted center gore area. It will also feature a five-foot shoulder on the west side of the structure and two-foot shoulder on the east side.
The existing two-span bridge over SEPTA was built in 1931. It is 42 feet wide and 63 feet long. The structure carries an average of 4,637 vehicles a day. The one-span concrete arch culvert over Cobbs Creek was built in 1924. It is 30 feet wide and 16 feet long.
Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $5,240,145 project that is financed with 100 percent state funds.
