PennDOT to Improve New Second Street Bridge in Cheltenham Township,
Montgomery County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today
that
construction will begin on Wednesday, June 21, to rehabilitate the
structurally
deficient bridge carrying New Second Street over Tacony Creek in Cheltenham

Township, Montgomery County.

Due to the nature of the bridge repairs, New Second Street between
Ashbourne
Road and Church Road will be closed and detoured during construction.
Motorists
will be directed to use Church Road, Route 73 (Township Line Road) and
Central
Avenue. The bridge is scheduled to reopen in September.

PennDOT's contractor will rehabilitate the structure by replacing the box
beams
and bridge barrier; installing new guide rail; repairing the substructure;
and
resurfacing the approach roadway.

The New Second Street bridge over Tacony Creek was built in 1959. The
single-span concrete box beam bridge is 44 feet long, 58 feet wide and
carries
an average of 13,589 vehicles a day.

The structure is one of eight bridges in Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery and
Philadelphia counties that PennDOT is repairing under a $7,555,555 project
financed by Act 89, the state's transportation plan.

PennDOT has completed the rehabilitations of the U.S. 13 (Bristol Pike)
bridge
over Martins Creek in Falls Township, Bucks County; Chinquapin Road bridge
over
Iron Works Creek in Northampton Township, Bucks County; Dark Hollow Road
bridge
over Tohickon Creek in Tinicum Township, Bucks County; Route 32 (South Main

Street) bridge over Aquetong Creek in New Hope Borough, Bucks County; Route
73
(Skippack Pike) bridge over Perkiomen Creek in Perkiomen and Skippack
townships, and Schwenksville Borough, Montgomery County; and the Broad
Street
(Route 611) bridge over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) in Philadelphia.

Construction began in May to rehabilitate the bridge carrying Bryn Mawr
Avenue
over Ithan Creek in Radnor Township, Delaware County. Work on the structure
is
scheduled to be completed in December.

Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor
on
the project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
