Wolf Administration Encourages Motorcyclists to Attend Free Safety Event

The Wolf Administration announced today that motorcyclists from throughout
the
Commonwealth are invited to attend the free Live Free Ride Alive Safety Day
at
the Farm Show Complex on Cameron Street on Saturday, July 8, from 1 to 5
PM, to
help spread awareness of the importance of motorcycle safety to riders and
motorists alike.

"Riders are a particularly close-knit community, and bringing the message
directly to them that safety can save lives – especially with a potentially

high-risk activity like motorcycling – is a challenge we gladly accept,"
said
Governor Tom Wolf. "The safety of all motorists on our Commonwealth's
roadways
is of the utmost importance as temperatures and traffic volumes rise with
the
onset of summer."

The first of its kind, the Live Free Ride Alive Safety Day features an
afternoon of activities designed to challenge riders' skills on and off the

motorcycle with a focus on safety.

Riders will be invited to test their motorcycle operating skills through
four
challenges. The "Curves Ahead" challenge tests a rider's ability to safely
negotiate a series of curves while maintaining proper balance and control
of
their motorcycle. The "Skills Challenge Course" is a compilation of
maneuvers
from the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program's (PAMSP) Basic Rider and
Basic
Rider Course 2 requiring a combination of skills to complete. The last
person
to cross the finish line wins the "Slow Race," a test of balance and
control of
a motorcycle at slow speeds. Rounding out the challenges is the "T-CLOCS
Challenge," testing a rider's ability to spot a problem with their
motorcycle
before taking to the roadways. The acronym represents the elements of a
pre-ride inspection – (T)ires and wheels, (C)ontrols, (L)ights and mirrors,

(O)il and other fluids, (C)hasis and (S)tand.

For riders and riding enthusiasts not interested in head-to-head
competition,
personnel from the PAMSP will present a series of motorcycle safety
seminars
and local merchants will echo the safety theme with mini education clinics.
The
Pennsylvania State Police and PAMSP will provide riding and braking
demonstrations, as well as a demonstration of the capabilities of one of
PAMSP's valued training tools – the SKIDBIKE™.

"Sharing the road safely, staying aware while driving or riding, obeying
speed
limits and being responsible will help keep motorcycle fatalities and
injuries
as low as possible, said PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards. "Taking a
training course under the watchful eye of a trained instructor also goes a
long
way in mitigating the likelihood of a crash."

The PAMSP offers Pennsylvania residents with a motorcycle permit the
opportunity to earn a motorcycle license or refresh their skills through
the
15-hour Basic Rider Course (BRC). It also offers a variety of training to
help
develop safe riding skills for all motorcyclists, no matter how experienced
or
inexperienced the rider. The courses include: the 15-hour Basic Rider
Course
(BRC); the six-hour Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2); the eight-hour Advanced
Rider
Course (ARC); and the 12-hour, 3 Wheel Motorcycle Basic Rider Course
(3WBRC).
All courses are offered free of charge to Pennsylvania residents with a
valid
motorcycle permit or license as required.
