U.S. 422 to Close Two Nights Next Week for Construction in Pottstown Area

Eastbound and westbound U.S. 422 in the Pottstown area will be closed and
detoured for two nights next week for barrier installation and line
striping
operations as part of a project to improve and reconstruct 1.2 miles of
U.S.
422 from just east of the Schuylkill River bridge to just west of the
Montgomery County line in North Coventry Township, Chester County, West
Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, and Douglass Township, Berks
County,
the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The work schedule is:

• From 9:00 PM Tuesday, October 10, to 5:00 AM Wednesday, October 11,
westbound
U.S. 422 will be closed and detoured from Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) to the

split with Benjamin Franklin Highway. During construction, westbound U.S.
422
motorists will be directed to take Route 100 North (Pottstown Pike) and
High
Street/Benjamin Franklin Highway to access westbound U.S. 422; and

• From 9:00 PM Wednesday, October 11, to 5:00 AM Thursday, October 12,
eastbound U.S. 422 will be closed and detoured from the split with Benjamin

Franklin Highway in Douglass Township, Berks County, to Route 100
(Pottstown
Pike) in North Coventry Township, Chester County. During construction,
eastbound U.S. 422 motorists will be directed to continue on Benjamin
Franklin
Highway/High Street and turn right on Route 100 South (Pottstown Pike) to
access the ramp to eastbound U.S. 422.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area
overnight because backups will occur. All scheduled activities are weather
dependent.

Under this improvement project, PennDOT is reconstructing U.S. 422 on both
existing and new alignments; reconfiguring the U.S. 422/Stowe Interchange
to a
diamond configuration; removing and replacing the existing ramps and
culverts;
installing new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, message
boards, signing, pavement markings, lighting, concrete median barriers,
median
glare screens and guide rail; upgrading stormwater management facilities
and
pipes; and constructing and restoring wetlands.

H & K Group, Inc. of Schwenksville, Montgomery County, is the general
contractor on the $35,581,408 improvement project which is financed with
100
percent state funds from Act 89, Pennsylvania's Transportation Plan. The
entire
project is scheduled to be completed in late 2020.
