Wolf Administration Announces Start of Construction to Replace U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) Bridge in Chester County

King of Prussia, PA – The Wolf Administration announced today that construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, November 5, on a project to replace the bridge carrying U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) over the east branch of Brandywine Creek in East Bradford and West Bradford townships, Chester County.

"As with every bridge replacement, PennDOT is committed to providing motorists with a long-term transportation facility that is structurally sound, capable of handling the volume of expected traffic and has the hydraulic capacity to improve the flow of the waterway below," said Governor Tom Wolf. "The department will be able to deliver this project with limited impact to motorists and their daily commutes."

The first phase of construction activities on U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) will begin on Monday, November 5, through Friday, November 9, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM with excavation and guide rail operations. Motorists may encounter periodic lane restrictions during these activities. Short-term flagging operations will also be utilized during future construction activities, so crews can complete the new roadway tie-in on both approaches to the new bridge.

This project was driven by the need to replace the existing steel beam bridge that was built in 1929 and is currently listed in poor condition.

PennDOT's contractor will construct a new two-span, concrete beam structure downstream of the existing crossing on a new alignment extending from the intersection of U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) and Sugars Bridge Road to the intersection of U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) and Skelp Level Road.

Allan Myers, LP, of Worcester, PA is the general contractor on the $5,859,555 project which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.

The entire project is expected to be completed in spring of 2020.
