PennDOT - District 6 News
U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) Lane Restrictions Scheduled for Bridge Replacement in Chester County
King of Prussia, PA – Lane restrictions with flagging are scheduled next week on U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) between Sugars Bridge Road and Skelp Level Road in East Bradford and West Bradford townships, Chester County, on Monday, November 4, through Friday, November 8, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for utility work under a project to replace the bridge carrying U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) over the east branch of Brandywine Creek, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
Additional lane closures will take place on U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) between Hall Road and Valley Creek Road on Thursday, November 7 and Friday, November 8, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for traffic adjustment operations.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
This project was driven by the need to replace the existing steel beam bridge that was built in 1929 and is currently listed in poor condition.
The new two-span, concrete bridge structure is being constructed downstream of the existing crossing on a new alignment extending from the intersection of U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) and Sugars Bridge Road to the intersection of U.S. 322 (Downingtown Pike) and Skelp Level Road. Operations began in November 2018 and the entire project is expected to be completed in spring of 2020.

PennDOT - District 6 News: I-76 East Lane Closure Next Week, Full Closure Next Weekend for Viaduct Rehabilitation in Center City Philadelphia
PennDOT - District 6 News
I-76 East Lane Closure Next Week, Full Closure Next Weekend for Viaduct Rehabilitation in Center City Philadelphia
King of Prussia, PA – Eastbound Interstate 76 will be reduced to one lane overnight next week and closed next weekend between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges in Philadelphia for viaduct repair and repaving in Center City, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
The work schedule is:
- Monday, November 4, through Thursday, November 7, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges for reconstruction of the shoulder area;
- Friday, November 8, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane at 9:00 PM, then closed completely from 11:00 PM until 5:00 AM Monday, November 11, between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges for pavement repairs and resurfacing; and
- Monday, November 4, through Friday, November 8, from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, there will be periodic, short-term closures of the right deceleration lane on westbound I-76 approaching the ramp to 30th Street for concrete placement under the viaduct.
During next weekend's closure of eastbound I-76, motorists will be directed to use the following alternate routes:
- Follow eastbound I-676 to southbound Interstate 95 to access I-76; or
- Exit at 30th Street, follow 30th Street around the station, turn right on Market Street, left on 38th Street and straight on University Avenue to 34th Street to access the ramp to eastbound I-76.
In addition, the Walnut Street ramp to eastbound I-76 will be closed from 9:00 PM Friday, November 8, through 5:00 AM Monday, November 11. Motorists will be directed to follow Walnut Street, turn left on 38th Street and go straight on University Avenue to 34th Street and the ramp to eastbound I-76.
Motorists are advised that the paving schedule may change based on weather forecasts because the paving material being used on the I-76 viaduct is a synthetic concrete (Polyester Polymer Concrete) that must be applied under dry conditions. The PPC material is being used because the synthetic concrete cures faster, allowing the viaduct's surface to be rehabilitated while minimizing the need for long-term lane closures that are required for curing conventional concrete pavement.
Drivers are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas during the lane closures because significant backups and delays will occur.
PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the I-76 viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken Borough, just east of the Interstate 476/Conshohocken Interchange in Montgomery County. More information is available at www.I76viaduct.com.
Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is scheduled to close for one year beginning in mid-June — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street. PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT to Host Open House Meeting for I-95 Improvement Projects at Bridge Street and Betsy Ross Bridge Interchanges in Philadelphia
PennDOT - District 6 News
PennDOT to Host Open House Meeting for I-95 Improvement Projects at Bridge Street and Betsy Ross Bridge Interchanges in Philadelphia
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will hold an open house public plans display on Tuesday, November 12, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. John Cantius Church gymnasium at 4415 Almond Street in Philadelphia to update citizens about upcoming projects to reconstruct and improve Interstate 95 at the Betsy Ross Bridge and Bridge Street interchanges in Philadelphia (Sections BSR and BRI).
The purpose of this meeting is to present revised design plans and obtain feedback from the public on proposed plans and design concepts for the two interchange areas. Important design changes have been made in response to public input since the last presentation in 2013.
The meeting will be conducted as an open-house plans display where citizens will have the opportunity to circulate among the subject displays to gather information and discuss the different facets of the project with PennDOT's design team.
Under this project, PennDOT will reconstruct I-95 between Levick Street, at the northern end of the current Bridge Street Interchange, and Wheatsheaf Lane, at the southern end of the existing Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange. Improvements also will be made to ramps and connecting local streets within the area of the interchanges.
Construction bids were opened in mid-October for rebuilding I-95 from Levick Street to Carver Street (Section BS1), with construction expected to get underway late this year. Construction bids for a second contract (Section BR2), which will complete the rebuilding of the ramps at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange, are scheduled to be opened in December, with construction starting in spring 2020. A contract to rebuild several of the existing ramps and construct two new ramps between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Aramingo Avenue (Section BR0) was completed in late 2017. Work is currently underway through 2020 to widen and improve Aramingo Avenue and other surface streets in the vicinity of the interchanges (Section BS4).
The BSR/BRI projects are anticipated to be built using 100 percent federal funds.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT, Elmwood Park Zoo, Montgomery County Commissioner, Police Highlight Pedestrian Safety for Halloween
PennDOT - District 6 News
PennDOT, Elmwood Park Zoo, Montgomery County Commissioner, Police Highlight Pedestrian Safety for Halloween
King of Prussia, PA – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Elmwood Park Zoo, Montgomery County Commissioner Kenneth Lawrence, Jr., West Norriton Police Department, and safety partners held a media event today at Elmwood Park Zoo's Boo at the Zoo event to highlight the importance of pedestrian safety on Halloween.
Officials stressed the importance for motorists to be extra cautious on Halloween to look out for trick-or-treaters. Parents and trick-or-treaters were also reminded to make their costumes visible to motorists with reflective tape or glow sticks. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, on average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than any other day of the year.
"One child getting hurt on Halloween is one too many," says PennDOT District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain. "Drivers need to use caution, slow down and always be aware of their surroundings."
In 2018, there were 69 total pedestrian crashes from October 27 to November 4 in Pennsylvania, up from 49 in 2017.
Motorists are reminded to be extra cautious and practice safe driving behaviors to keep pedestrians safe by following these safety tips:
• Eyes should be on the road always. Avoid distractions, such as cell phone use, eating and adjusting the radio;
• Slow Down. If motorists are practicing safe speeds they are more aware of their surroundings;
• Do not drive impaired. Plan ahead before attending Halloween parties, and designate a sober driver or use public transportation to get home safely; and
• If you are out driving on Halloween night, you should be extra cautious, especially in residential neighborhoods. There will be lots of children out, who are not necessarily paying attention to you or your car.
If you are walking on Halloween, please remember PennDOT's following safety tips:
• Trick-or-treat in a group instead of by yourself;
• Carry a flashlight;
• Place reflective tape on your costume, or wear a glow stick, so drivers can see you;
• Walk on the sidewalk if one is available, or walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic;
• Never walk in between parked cars, and only visit homes with lights on;
• Always cross the street at a corner and look both ways before crossing; and
• Lift your mask while walking house to house.

The lane closures over the next several weeks will allow crews to reconstruct and pave the shoulders in order to shift traffic onto the temporary pavement before the end of the year under Stage 1 construction. Once the new pattern is in place, activities over the winter will include center median and inlet reconstruction in this southern section of the project limits.
James D. Morrissey, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the $53,491,393 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
