PennDOT to Host Open House for I-95 Reconstruction, Cap Expansion Project in Center City Philadelphia
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the City of Philadelphia and the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) will hold an open house public plans display on Thursday, October 17, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Lodge at Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest, located at 101 South Columbus Boulevard in Philadelphia, to inform citizens about the upcoming project to reconstruct Interstate 95 and expand the cap over the highway between Chestnut and Sansom streets in Center City.
This project, known as I-95 Central Access Philadelphia (I-95 CAP), will be the first construction phase of future improvements to I-95 in Center City and South Philadelphia that are currently being planned as a part of the I-95 Central to South Philadelphia Study.
The purpose of the open house is to present plans and gather feedback on proposed designs for reconstruction of I-95, the expansion of the highway cap and new bicycle and pedestrian connections and public space. The meeting will be conducted as an open-house plans display where citizens will have the opportunity to circulate among the subject displays to gather information and discuss the different facets of the project with PennDOT's design team as well as representatives from the City and DRWC.
In addition to reconstructing I-95 and expanding the public space over the highway, the project includes extending the South Street Pedestrian Bridge across Columbus Boulevard and constructing a portion of the Central Delaware Multi-Use Trail.
Construction on the project is expected to begin in 2022. The project is anticipated to be financed with federal, state, local and private funds.
