Walnut Lane Roundabout at Park Line Road to Close for Reconstruction in
Philadelphia

The newly reconstructed Walnut Lane roundabout and bridge will reopen on
Tuesday afternoon, September 27, in Philadelphia , the Pennsylvania
Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced. The Walnut Lane bridge has
been
closed for construction since April 1, 2016, and the roundabout closed
Saturday, August 27,

The work is part of PennDOT's $14.7 million project to rehabilitate the
historic Walnut Lane Bridge over Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia. Crews
will
continue to work to construct a new sidewalk on the bridge and make repairs
to
the concrete arch.

The reconstruction of the roundabout will enhance travel and safety by
calming
traffic as it enters and exits the roundabout and providing better
pedestrian
access. The work included resurfacing the roundabout approaches; installing
new
sidewalks; installing curb ramps; reconstructing and landscaping the center

island; relocating a water main and inlets; and installing new fire
hydrants.

Construction began in November 2015 to rehabilitate the bridge by removing
the
existing bridge deck and replacing it with a new concrete deck. The plan
also
includes replacing the existing sidewalk, sidewalk supports and balustrade
railing, and repairing the support abutments and piers with formed concrete
to
match the architectural line and texture of the existing abutments and
piers.
The existing plaque at the southwest corner of the bridge is being
maintained,
and the damaged plaque at the northeast corner is being replaced with a
replica
plaque. The contractor also is installing new tear-drop street lights, and
removing the existing temporary structure under the bridge over Forbidden
Drive.

The six-span Walnut Lane bridge was built in 1907. The concrete arch
structure
is 565 feet long and 60 feet wide. It carried 16,810 vehicles a day prior
to
its closing.

Buckley and Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the
$14,769,654 contractor which is funded with 100 percent federal funds. The
project is expected to finish in August 2017.
