I-76 East Lane Closures at Night Next Week for Start of Viaduct Rehabilitation in Center City Philadelphia
King of Prussia, PA – Eastbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will be reduced to a single lane at night late next week and next weekend between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges in Philadelphia for the start of a two-year project to rehabilitate the 6,120-foot-long viaduct that carries the expressway through Center City, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
The contractor's work schedule for reducing eastbound I-76 from two lanes-to-one is:
- 9:00 PM Thursday, April 4, to 5:00 AM Friday, April 5;
- 9:00 PM Friday April 5, to 10:00 AM Saturday, April 6;
- 9:00 PM Saturday, April 6 to 10:00 AM Sunday, April 7; and
- 9:00 PM Sunday, April 7, to 5:00 AM Monday, April 8.
The lane closures will allow crews to clean out drainage inlets and begin repairing the expansion dams on the eastbound side of the 289-span viaduct.
PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the Center City Philadelphia viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) and Arrowmink Creek in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County just east of the Interstate 476/Conshohocken Interchange.
During repairs to the Center City structure, one side of the expressway at a time will be reduced to a single lane or closed completely overnight. In addition, one side of the expressway at a time will be reduced to a single lane during weekend daytime hours a minimum of 10 times eastbound (in 2019) and 10 times westbound (2020) on non-holiday and select weekends.
Rehabilitation of the Center City viaduct includes repairing or replacing expansion joints; repairing deteriorated sections of the concrete decks; rehabilitating numerous piers, columns and other sub-structure components; repairing the viaducts' drainage system; and repaving the deck with a concrete overlay.
Repairs to the structure in West Conshohocken are expected to begin in May or June 2019 and will be completed by November 2019. Work on this viaduct, which includes repairs to expansion joints, deck beams and other structural components, will be done using single lane overnight closures seven days a week between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
