PennDOT to Begin Rehabilitation of Greenwood Avenue Bridge in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin Monday, March 25, to rehabilitate the bridge carrying Greenwood Avenue over a branch of Rock Creek in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County.
PennDOT's contractor will rehabilitate the bridge by removing and resetting the masonry arch barrel, walls and barrier; excavating and replacing the arch backfill with lightweight concrete; and replacing existing concrete parapets with a stone masonry facing.
Due to the nature of construction, Greenwood Avenue will be closed and detoured between Hedgerow Lane and Spruce Lane during the length of the rehabilitation project. Beginning Monday, March 25, through early September, Greenwood Avenue motorists will be directed to use Route 309 (Ogontz Avenue), Route 152 (Easton Road), and Route 73 (Church Road). Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.
Built in 1908, the Greenwood Avenue Bridge over a branch of Rock Creek is a single-span stone masonry arch structure, and carries an average of 9,128 vehicles a day.
This structure is one of seven bridges in Philadelphia, Delaware and Montgomery counties that PennDOT is repairing under a $7,220,000 bridge improvement project.
Structure completed under this project include:
- The U.S. 13 (Frankford Avenue) bridge over Pennypack Creek in Philadelphia.
The other structures scheduled for rehabilitation under this project include:
- Eagleville Road over Eagleville Run in Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County;
- Bryn Mawr Avenue over Doom Run in Radnor Township, Delaware County;
- Bryn Mawr Avenue over Meadowbrook Creek in Radnor Township, Delaware County;
- Bryn Mawr Avenue over a tributary to Meadowbrook Run in Radnor Township, Delaware County; and
- Byberry Road over Southampton Creek in Upper Moreland Township and Bryn Athyn Borough, Montgomery County.
Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in late 2019.
Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor on this bridge improvement project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
