I-95 South Double Lane Closures at Night Next Week for Lighting Improvements in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Southbound Interstate 95 motorists will encounter double lane closures next week from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM between the Washington Avenue/Columbus Boulevard (Exit 20) and Interstate 676/Callowhill (Exit 22) interchanges in Philadelphia for testing operations on a project to install a new underpass lighting system in the covered section of I-95 near Dock Street, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Weather permitting, the work schedule on southbound I-95 is:
  • Monday, March 25, and Tuesday, March 26, the two right lanes are scheduled to close; and
  • Wednesday, March 27, through Friday, March 29, the two left lanes are scheduled to close.
In addition to the lane closures, there will be periodic 15-minute traffic stoppages on northbound and southbound I-95 between the Washington Avenue/Columbus Boulevard (Exit 20) and I-676/Callowhill (Exit 22) interchanges on Monday, March 25, and Tuesday, March 26, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate or allow more time for travel on I-95 in the work area because significant backups and delays will occur.

In addition to installing a new underpass lighting system, PennDOT's contractor is reconstructing five pump stations in Philadelphia and Bristol Township, Bucks County. All work on this project is scheduled to be completed in December.

PKF-Mark III, Inc. of Newtown, Bucks County is the general contractor on the $29,884,795 improvement project which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
