PennDOT - District 6 News

I-95 South Lane Closure at Night Next Week for Viaduct Construction at Girard Avenue in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Southbound Interstate 95 will be reduced from three lanes-to-two on Monday, September 30, through Thursday, October 3, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for viaduct construction between the Girard Avenue and Interstate 676 interchanges in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Crews will be closing the southbound right lane for placement of concrete for the parapet wall on a section of the new southbound I-95 viaduct that is being replaced under PennDOT's $312 million project to rebuild southbound I-95 at the Girard Avenue Interchange.

The Girard Avenue ramp to southbound I-95 will remain open during the parapet construction operation. The southbound off-ramp at Girard Avenue remains closed for reconstruction until mid-2021.

In addition, Lehigh Avenue will be closed and detoured between Salmon Street and Richmond Street on Monday, September 30, through Friday, October 4, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM for demolition of the overhead viaduct. Eastbound Lehigh Avenue traffic will be directed south on Aramingo Avenue, and east on Cumberland Street to Richmond Street. Westbound Lehigh Avenue traffic will be directed west on Cumberland Street and north on Aramingo Avenue.

If demolition activities at Lehigh Avenue are completed by Thursday, October 3, northbound Aramingo Avenue also will be closed and detoured between Delaware Avenue/Richmond Street and York Street on Friday, October 4, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM for additional viaduct demolition. Traffic will be detoured north on Richmond Street and west on Cumberland Street to Aramingo Avenue.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

PennDOT - District 6 News: U.S. 1 North Lane Closure, Turnpike Ramp Closure This Weekend for Construction in Bensalem

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 1 North Lane Closure, Turnpike Ramp Closure This Weekend for Construction in Bensalem

King of Prussia, PA – Northbound U.S. 1 will be reduced to a single lane and the northbound U.S. 1 ramps to and from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Plaza at the Bensalem Interchange will be closed and detoured from 6:00 PM Saturday, September 28, to 5:00 AM Monday, September 30, for construction of replacement ramps in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The weekend lane closure on U.S. 1 will extend from north of Old Lincoln Highway to the Neshaminy Exit. During the northbound lane closure, the ramps to and from northbound U.S. 1 and Street Road (Route 132) will remain open, but backups are expected to occur on the ramps at times due to the lane restriction on U.S. 1.

During the closure of the northbound U.S. 1 ramp to the Turnpike, northbound U.S. 1 motorists will be detoured to the Neshaminy Exit, turn left on Rockhill Drive, turn right on the ramp to southbound U.S. 1, then right on the ramp to the Turnpike Toll Plaza.

Turnpike motorists exiting at Bensalem and heading for northbound U.S. 1 will be detoured to the ramp to southbound U.S. 1, turn right onto the ramp to eastbound Street Road (Route 132), then left at the temporary traffic signal at the ramp to northbound U.S. 1.

The weekend restrictions will allow crews to complete construction of new, wider replacement ramps on the northbound side of U.S. 1. By Monday morning, September 30, the new replacement ramps will reopen just north of the existing ramps.

In addition, periodic lane restrictions will be in place on U.S.1 and Street Road (Route 132) in both directions on Sunday, September 29, through Friday, October 4, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning for roadway and bridge construction activities. The work locations are:

  • U.S. 1 in both directions between Rockhill Drive and Old Lincoln Highway; and
  • Street Road (Route 132) in both directions between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are weather permitting.

The work is part of a corridor improvement project, and the first of three construction contracts, to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough. PennDOT - District 6 News: I-76 East Full Closure This Weekend for Viaduct Rehabilitation, Paving in Center City Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 East Full Closure This Weekend for Viaduct Rehabilitation, Paving in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Eastbound Interstate 76 will be closed and detoured between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges in Center City Philadelphia from 11:00 PM Friday, September 27, to 5:00 AM Monday, September 30, for pavement repairs and repaving of a section of the Schuylkill Expressway viaduct, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Prior to the full closure Friday night, September 27, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
When eastbound I-76 is closed, motorists will be directed to use the following alternate routes:

  • Follow eastbound I-676 to southbound Interstate 95 to access I-76; or
  • Exit at 30th Street, follow 30th Street around the station, turn right on Market Street, left on 38th Street and straight on University Avenue to 34th Street to access the ramp to eastbound I-76.

During the closure of eastbound I-76, the following ramps will be closed and detoured from 11:00 PM Friday, September 27, to 5:00 AM Monday, September 30:

  • Westbound I-676 ramp to eastbound I-76. I-676 motorists will be detoured west on I-76 to the Montgomery Drive/West River Drive exit, then take the ramp to eastbound I-76 and follow the detour at 30th Street; and
  • Walnut Street ramp to eastbound I-76. Motorists will be directed to follow Walnut Street, turn left on 38th Street and go straight on University Avenue to 34th Street and the ramp to eastbound I-76.

In addition, sections of westbound I-76 will be closed and eastbound I-76 will be restricted to a single lane overnight next week. Weather permitting, the work schedule is:

  • Monday, September 30, through Thursday, October 3, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges for pavement repairs;
  • Monday, September 30, through Thursday, October 3, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane at 9:00 PM, then closed completely from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning between the 30th Street and I-676 interchanges for demolition and painting of the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct over I-76. During the closure, westbound I-76 motorists will exit at 30th Street and follow Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp to westbound I-76 or to eastbound I-676; and
  • Monday, September 30, through Friday, October 4, from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, there will be periodic, short-term closures of the deceleration lane on westbound I-76 approaching the ramp to 30th Street for concrete placement under the viaduct.

Drivers are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas during the lane closures because significant backups and delays will occur.

Motorists are advised that the paving schedule may change based on weather forecasts because the paving material being used on the I-76 viaduct is a synthetic concrete (Polyester Polymer Concrete) that must be applied under dry conditions. The PPC material is being used because the synthetic concrete cures faster, allowing the viaduct's surface to be rehabilitated while minimizing the need for long-term lane closures that are required for curing conventional concrete pavement.

PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the I-76 viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken Borough, just east of the Interstate 476/Conshohocken Interchange in Montgomery County. More information is available at www.I76viaduct.com.

Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is scheduled to close for one year beginning in mid-June — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street.
