JFK Boulevard Lane Closure Near 30th Street for Bridge Repair in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – PennDOT has closed the left lane on JFK Boulevard from just west of 30th Street to Market Street due to serious deterioration of a bridge column on the structure that carries the highway over SEPTA tracks in Center City Philadelphia. The left lane will remain closed until PennDOT bridge engineers can examine the damage and develop a plan to reopen the lane.

During the lane closure, one lane of traffic on JFK Boulevard will remain open in each direction. Drivers should allow additional time for travel in the area because significant backups and delays will occur.

The two-span concrete encased steel I-beam bridge was built in 1903. The structure is 44 feet long, 94 feet wide and carries approximately 9,615 vehicles a day.  The bridge is currently posted for 15 tons and is listed in serious condition. A project to rehabilitate the 116-year-old structure is scheduled to begin in summer 2020.
