I-76 East to Close at Night Next Week, Next Weekend for Rehabilitation of Two Viaducts in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Eastbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Center City Philadelphia will close at night next week and next weekend for painting of the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct over the expressway at 30th Street and for repaving of a section of the Schuylkill Expressway viaduct between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Weather permitting, eastbound I-76 will be closed between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges overnight next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 19-21, and reduced to a single lane during the day Saturday and Sunday between the overnight full closures.

In addition to the weekend closures, eastbound I-76 will be closed between 30th Street and South Street overnight on Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19, for painting of the overhead viaduct.

The detailed work schedule is:
  • Monday, July 15, through Thursday, July 18, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the South Street and Interstate 676 interchanges for repair to the "river wall" retaining wall between the Schuylkill River and I-76;
  • Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19, from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, the ramp from westbound I-76 to 30th Street will be shortened periodically for concrete placement under the viaduct;
  • Monday, July 15, Through Friday, July 19, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane, then closed completely each night from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning between the South Street and 30th Street interchanges to prepare the expressway for paving and for repainting of the overhead viaduct;
  • Friday, July 19, from 11:00 PM to 10:00 AM the following morning, eastbound I-76 will be closed between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges for paving;
  • Saturday, July 20, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges, then closed completely until 10:00 AM Sunday, July 21 for paving; and
  • Sunday, July 21, from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges, then closed completely from 9:00 PM until 5:00 AM Monday, July 22, for paving.
During the full closure of eastbound I-76, motorists will be directed to exit at 30th Street, follow 30th Street around the station, turn right on Market Street, left on 38th Street and straight on University Avenue to 34th Street to access the ramp to eastbound I-76.

In addition, the ramp to eastbound I-76 at Walnut Street will be closed from 9:00 PM Friday, July 19, to 5:00 AM Monday, July 22, during the weekend paving operations on eastbound I-76.

During the ramp closure, motorists will be directed to follow Walnut Street, turn left on 38th Street and straight on University Avenue to 34th Street to access the ramp to eastbound I-76.

Motorists are advised that the paving schedule may change based on weather forecasts because the paving material being used on the I-76 viaduct is a synthetic concrete (Polyester Polymer Concrete) that must be applied under dry conditions. The PPC material is being used because the synthetic concrete cures faster, allowing the viaduct's surface to be rehabilitated while minimizing the need for long-term lane closures that are required for curing conventional concrete pavement.

Drivers are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas during the lane closures because significant backups and delays will occur.

PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the I-76 viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken, just east of the Interstate 476/Conshohocken Interchange in Montgomery County. More information is available at www.I76viaduct.com.

Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is scheduled to close for one year beginning in mid-June — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street.
