PennDOT Reopens Greenwood Avenue Bridge in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today reopened the bridge carrying Greenwood Avenue over a branch of Rock Creek in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, following the completion of a rehabilitation project.
PennDOT's contractor removed and reset the masonry arch barrel, walls and barrier; excavated and replaced the arch backfill with lightweight concrete; and replaced the concrete parapets with a stone masonry facing.
Built in 1908, the Greenwood Avenue Bridge over a branch of Rock Creek is a single-span stone masonry arch structure and carries an average of 9,128 vehicles a day.
This structure is one of seven bridges in Philadelphia, Delaware and Montgomery counties that PennDOT is repairing under a $7,220,000 bridge improvement project.
Structures completed under this project include:
• Eagleville Road over Eagleville Run in Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County;
• Byberry Road over Southampton Creek in Upper Moreland Township and Bryn Athyn Borough, Montgomery County; and
• The U.S. 13 (Frankford Avenue) bridge over Pennypack Creek in Philadelphia.
The other structures scheduled for rehabilitation under this project include:
• Bryn Mawr Avenue over Doom Run in Radnor Township, Delaware County;
• Bryn Mawr Avenue over Meadowbrook Creek in Radnor Township, Delaware County; and
• Bryn Mawr Avenue over a tributary to Meadowbrook Run in Radnor Township, Delaware County.
Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor on this bridge improvement project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in late 2019.
