PennDOT to Rehabilitate Adams Avenue Bridge in Philadelphia

PennDOT to Rehabilitate Adams Avenue Bridge in Philadelphia

4/26/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA

Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, May 9, on a four-month, $2.8
million
project to rehabilitate the structurally-deficient Adams Avenue bridge over

Tacony Creek in the Lawncrest section of the City of Philadelphia, the
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced.

PennDOT's contractor will repair and strengthen the stone masonry arch
structure by resetting and repointing stones on the three-span bridge,
including the stones protruding on top of the sidewall.

The improvement plan also consists of removing the earthen fill inside the
structure and replacing it with lightweight concrete; rebuilding the
existing
wing walls that extend from the support abutments; widening the right turn
lane
onto Crescentville Road to improve traffic flow through the intersection;
and
installing scour protection around the support abutments and piers.

Adams Avenue will be closed and detoured between Newtown Avenue and
Crescentville Road during construction. Adams Avenue through traffic will
be
detoured over Rising Sun Avenue, Olney Avenue, North Front Street and East
Godfrey Avenue. Traffic signal timings will be adjusted along the detour
route
to accommodate additional traffic at the affected intersections.

The bridge was built 1901 and carries approximately 16,000 vehicles a day.
The
structure is 71 feet long and 26 feet wide.

Loftus Construction, of Cinnaminson, N.J. is the general contractor on the
$2,813,000 contract that is financed with 100 percent state funds. The
bridge
is scheduled to reopen by September 2. The entire project is expected to
finish
by mid-September.
