I-76 East, West Lane Closures Planned Late Next Week for Viaduct Rehabilitation in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) motorists will encounter single lane conditions at night next week and weekend in either the eastbound or westbound direction between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges in Philadelphia for construction to rehabilitate the 1.2-mile-long viaduct that carries the expressway through Center City, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The contractor's work schedule is:
  • From 9:00 PM Thursday, April 11, to 5:00 AM Friday, April 12, one lane closed eastbound;
  • From 9:00 PM Friday April 12, to 10:00 AM Saturday, April 13, one lane closed eastbound;
  • From 9:00 PM Saturday, April 13, to 10:00 AM Sunday, April 15, one lane closed either eastbound or westbound; and
  • From 9:00 PM Sunday, April 15, to 5:00 AM Monday, April 16, one lane closed either eastbound or westbound.
Motorists are advised to use an alternate route or expect backups and delays approaching the work zone. All schedule activities are weather permitting.

The overnight lane closures will allow crews to clean out drainage inlets on both sides of the interstate and begin repairing the expansion dams and pavement joints on the eastbound side of the 289-span viaduct. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the Center City Philadelphia viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) and Arrowmink Creek in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County.

Rehabilitation of the Center City viaduct includes repairing or replacing expansion joints; repairing deteriorated sections of the concrete decks; rehabilitating numerous piers, columns and other sub-structure components; repairing the viaducts' drainage system; and repaving the deck with a concrete overlay.

Repairs to the structure in West Conshohocken are expected to begin this June and will be completed this November. Work on this viaduct, which includes repairs to expansion joints, deck beams and other structural components, will be done using single lane overnight closures seven days a week between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

Information about the project, including each week's planned lane restrictions and/or closings, is available at the project website www.I76viaduct.com.
