PennDOT District 6 Wins Preservation Award for Historic Ross Fording Road Bridge Rehabilitation in Chester County
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 6 is the winner of a 2019 Preservation Achievement Grand Jury Award from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia for the rehabilitation of the historic Ross Fording Road Bridge over Octoraro Creek, that connects rural farming communities on the border of Chester and Lancaster counties.
"The Ross Fording Road Bridge rehabilitation project is an outstanding achievement in bridge engineering demonstrating a commitment to maintaining the integrity and character of our historic structures," said PennDOT District 6 Cultural Resources Professional Monica Harrower. "We mobilized an emergency response and significant resources to efficiently and effectively save this bridge from total collapse."
The Ross Fording Road Bridge, a single span Phoenix column Pratt pony truss, was originally built in 1885 and listed in the National Register on June 22, 1988. PennDOT completed a rehabilitation of the 134-year-old bridge in 2013. On July 2, 2015, PennDOT was notified that the historic structure had been struck by a truck overnight which had fractured the end post of the bridge truss, causing partial collapse. PennDOT and design consultant HDR determined that due to the historic significance of the structure, rehabilitation was the proper course of action.
PennDOT and HDR developed a rehabilitation program that was cost effective and would result in better protection from future vehicle impacts with the installation of approach guide rail and upgrading of the bridge railings.
The rehabilitation was completed in May 2018. Construction on the $663,762 rehabilitation project was financed with 100 percent state funds.
Joining PennDOT in the receipt of the award is the project designer, HDR of Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County and the general contractor, Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, NJ.
