PennDOT to Host Open House Meeting for U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass) Reconstruction Project in Chester County

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will hold an open house public plans display on Tuesday, May 14th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hopewell Elementary School at 602 Garfield Street in Oxford to inform citizens about an upcoming project to reconstruct and improve travel on six miles of U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass) from just north of the Locust Street bridge to just north the Route 896 (Newark Road) Interchange in Oxford, Lower Oxford, and Upper Oxford townships, Chester County.

The purpose of the open house is to present the public with progress plans and a status update on the project. The meeting will be conducted as an open-house plans display where citizens will have the opportunity to circulate among the subject displays to gather information and discuss the different facets of the project with PennDOT's design team.

Under the U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass) Section 100 project, PennDOT will perform full depth reconstruction of deteriorated pavement along the corridor; widen shoulders; improve acceleration and deceleration lanes at interchanges; upgrade interchange ramps, perform bridge and culvert repairs including the replacement of the structure carrying Route 10 (Limestone Road) over U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass); and increase the vertical clearance of all overhead structures in the project limits. Two roundabouts are also proposed on the north and south sides of the U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass) and Route 896 (Newark Road) interchange at the intersections of the U.S. 1 ramps and Route 896 (Newark Road).

The purpose of the project is to enhance travel and safety on U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass) by replacing the deteriorated pavement which has reached the end of its service life; addressing bridge deficiencies along the corridor; and bringing any substandard design elements which date to the road's original design from the mid-1960's up to current standards.

Construction bids on this project are expected to open in 2023. The project is anticipated to be funded with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state dollars.
