PennDOT to Begin Rehabilitation of Township Line Road Bridge over Stony Creek in Montgomery County on September 4
King of Prussia, PA – Construction is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 4, to rehabilitate the two-span bridge carrying Township Line Road over Stony Creek in East Norriton and Whitpain townships, Montgomery County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. The bridge is expected to reopen in late 2018.
PennDOT is rehabilitating the 85-year-old bridge because of the deteriorated condition of its concrete deck and steel beams. The bridge's weight posting was recently reduced from 16 tons to 3 tons.
As part of this transportation improvement project, crews will replace the bridge's concrete bridge deck and superstructure.
Due to the nature of the structural repairs, Township Line Road will be closed and detoured between North Wales Road and U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike). Township Line Road motorists will be directed to use North Wales Road, Route 73 (Skippack Pike) and U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike). Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the construction area because slowdowns will occur. The work schedule is weather dependent.
Built in 1933, the Township Line Road bridge over Stony Creek carries an average of 10,000 vehicles a day. The bridge is 66 feet long and 32 feet wide.
The structure is one of 12 bridges in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties that PennDOT is repairing under a $5,505,505 project financed by Act 89, the state's transportation plan.
Structures completed under this project include:
- Thatcher Road over Kimples Creek in Haycock Township, Bucks County;
- Farmington Avenue over Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) in Upper Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County;
- Gypsy Lane over Interstate 76 in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County;
- Northbound U.S. 1 over Church Road in New Garden Township, Chester County;
- Southbound U.S. 1 over Church Road in New Garden Township, Chester County;
- Cowpath Road over Perkiomen Creek in Salford and Franconia townships, Montgomery County;
- Township Road over U.S. 1 in Lower Oxford Township, Chester County;
- University Road bridge over U.S. 1 in Upper Oxford Township, Chester County;
- Spring Garden Street bridge over Interstate 76 in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County; and
- Terwood Road bridge over Pennypack Creek in Upper Moreland Township, Montgomery County.
The remaining bridge included in this rehabilitation project includes:
- Thatcher Road over Tohickon Creek in Richland Township, Bucks County.
Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in October 2019.
Loftus Construction, Inc., of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor on the project which is financed with 100 percent state funds through Act 89, Pennsylvania's transportation plan.
