Cayuga Street Ramp to U.S. 1 South (Roosevelt Expressway) to Close April 16 for Viaduct Construction in Philadelphia
King of Prussia, PA – The Cayuga Street ramp to southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) in Philadelphia will close on Tuesday, April 16, for four years of construction on a project to rehabilitate the half-mile-long Wayne Junction Viaduct that carries the expressway over SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown section of the city, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
Motorists normally using the Cayuga Street on-ramp from northbound Broad Street (Route 611) will be directed to turn right on the northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard), right on Old York Road, right on Hunting Park Avenue, right on Wissahickon Avenue and left on Abbottsford Avenue to access the ramp to southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway).
Motorists heading to the Cayuga Street on-ramp from southbound Broad Street will turn right on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) and stay straight onto Hunting Park Avenue, turn right on Wissahickon Avenue and turn left on Abbottsford Avenue to access the ramp to southbound U.S.1 (Roosevelt Expressway).
Following the ramp closure, which will take place mid-day on Tuesday, April 16, crews will begin work at night to set up a new traffic pattern on the expressway between the Broad Street (Route 611) and Wissahickon Avenue exits for the first stage of work to repair the viaduct. During the pattern, lane closures will be in place in one or both directions on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) weeknights from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning.
The Cayuga Street ramp to southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) will remain closed until fall 2022 to safely maintain two lanes of southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) during staged construction on the top side of the viaduct. PennDOT will maintain two lanes of traffic in both directions on the U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) during peak travel times during all stages of viaduct repairs.
PennDOT's is rehabilitating the 15-span, 2,600-foot long steel multi-girder structure by placing a new concrete deck; repairing structural steel and deteriorated concrete in the substructures; cleaning and painting; and replacing bearings, downspouts and scuppers.
The project also includes installing new directional signing along U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway); upgrading Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) components; and rehabilitating the bridge carrying Fox Street over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway).
South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J. is the general contractor on the $88.5 million project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in late 2022.
