PennDOT Reopens 19th Street Bridge Over I-676 in Philadelphia

PennDOT Reopens 19th Street Bridge Over I-676 in Philadelphia

1/11/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA

The new 19th Street Bridge over Interstate 676 in Center City Philadelphia
reopened today following its reconstruction that began in October 2015
under
the first stage of a $64.8 million project to rebuild seven deteriorated
bridges over I-676 between 18th Street and 22nd Street, the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The bridge carrying 19th Street over I-676 is the first of the seven
bridges to
be completed. The completion of the rebuilt span reopens 19th Street to
vehicles and pedestrians between Vine Street on the north side of I-676 and

Logan Circle south of I-676.

The new single span 19th Street Bridge replaces the original two-span
structure
that was built in the 1950's. The new 19th Street Bridge includes two
southbound travel lanes, new wider sidewalks, street lights, ornamental
fencing
and concrete planter boxes. These public amenities are similar to those
currently under-construction at the new pedestrian bridges over I-676 on
both
sides of 19th Street.

With completion of the 19th Street Bridge, five additional bridges over
I-676
remain under construction, including the expansive structure carrying 20th
Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway; the pedestrian bridges between
18th
and 19th streets and between 19th and 20th streets; the 21st Street Bridge;
and
the 22nd Street Bridge. The final bridge being replaced under this project,
the
18th Street overpass, will be closed for construction beginning in spring
2017.

The entire project to replace seven bridges and expand and improve public
space
on and around the bridges is scheduled to be completed in late 2018.

Buckley & Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the
$64,836,180 project. Construction is financed with 100 percent federal
funds.
