King of Prussia, PA – A moving right lane closure is scheduled in both directions on Henry Avenue between Barnes Street and Rector Street in Philadelphia, on Thursday, November 4, from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, under a project to improve travel and safety on a 3.2-mile section of Henry Avenue, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will install or upgrade traffic signals at several intersections to include new mast arms, controllers, signal heads, timing optimization, signal interconnectivity and pedestrian countdown timers. Updated traffic signal timing will be implemented at the Walnut Lane intersection and a traffic signal will be installed at the Barnes Street Intersection, as well as a red-light warning flashing signal just north of the Port Royal Intersection.

Additional improvements on Henry Avenue include: New signing and roadway design features through pavement markings; Milling and resurfacing; Median widening; and Guiderail replacement.

To improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on Henry Avenue, improvements include: Extending the southbound restricted parking between Monastery Avenue and Walnut Lane; Eliminating the channelized right turn lanes at the Gates Street and Wigard Avenue intersections; Adding a raised concrete median at Valley Avenue to eliminate left turns; and Lengthening the northbound left turn lane at Livezey Lane.

To enhance pedestrian and bicyclist mobility, the contractor will construct a shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path along the east side of Henry Avenue between Barnes Street and Walnut Lane. Other safety enhancements include installing bump-outs at 15 intersections and ADA curb ramps at various intersections along the corridor.

The project will feature the addition of speed calming measures on this section of Henry Avenue that sees an average daily traffic volume of 29,000 vehicles daily. The features include 35 mph pavement markings adjacent to speed limit signs; oversized speed limit signs with orange diamonds; electronic speed feedback signs north of Leverington Avenue and north of Cinnaminson Street; and speed limit signs and hidden driveway signs south of Cinnaminson Street.

The project will also address storm water management through storm drainage, water facility relocation, and green stormwater infrastructure.

During construction, PennDOT will maintain traffic on Henry Avenue by utilizing long-term lane shifts and short-term lane closures.

Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Chester County is the general contractor on the $12.8 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in late 2023. More information is available at www.Penndot.gov/HenryAvePhilly.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 1 Periodic Nighttime Lane Closures, Traffic Stoppages Next Week for Construction in Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA - Periodic northbound and southbound single lane closures and 15-minute traffic stoppages may be in place on U.S. 1 in Bucks County on Monday, November 1, through Thursday, November 4, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM for construction between the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange in Bensalem Township and the Penndel/Business U.S.1 Interchange in Middletown Township, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the periodic 15-minute traffic stoppages on U.S.1, Bristol Road also will be closed between Neshaminy Boulevard and Old Lincoln Highway. The stoppages and closures are required as crews conduct controlled blasting operations to remove rock from the embankments along U.S. 1 where widening will take place.

In addition, the ramp from Street Road (Route 132) to northbound U.S. 1 will be closed from 8:00 PM Friday, October 29, to 6:00 PM Saturday, October 30 for intersection construction. Street Road (Route 132) will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the intersection, and ramp traffic will be detoured on Old Lincoln Highway to northbound U.S. 1.

Next weekend, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 to westbound Street Road (Route 132) will be closed from 8:00 PM Friday, November 5, to 6:00 PM Saturday, November 6 for intersection construction. Crews are reconstructing and widening nearly three miles of roadway, improving the interchanges, and constructing several new bridges — including new structures over the Neshaminy Creek and over rail lines near the Penndel exit — under two contracts (RC1, RC2) to rebuild, widen and improve U.S.1 in Bucks County.

PennDOT - District 6 News: More than 80 Police Departments across Southeast Pennsylvania to Target Aggressive Drivers during Statewide Mobilization

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

More than 80 Police Departments across Southeast Pennsylvania to Target Aggressive Drivers during Statewide Mobilization

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that more than 80 municipal police departments from Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties will join the Pennsylvania State Police in a coordinated aggressive driving enforcement wave to help reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities on area roadways as part of a statewide mobilization that runs through November 14.

The enforcement wave will focus on the Move Over Law, school bus safety, speeding, and tailgating. Motorists exhibiting other aggressive actions or unsafe behaviors may also be cited.

Law enforcement will use traffic enforcement zones, saturation patrols, speed enforcement details, corridor enforcement, work zone enforcement, and multi-jurisdictional patrol strategies to identify and cite aggressive drivers.

The enforcement is part of Pennsylvania's Highway Safety Program and is funded by part of PennDOT's investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

If you encounter an aggressive driver, PennDOT offers these tips:
  • Get out of their way and don't challenge them.
  • Stay relaxed, avoid eye contact, and ignore rude gestures.
  • Don't block the passing lane if you are driving slower than most of the traffic.
In 2020, there were 5,615 aggressive driving crashes, resulting in 91 fatalities and 401 suspected serious injuries. Aggressive driving crashes are crashes involving at least two aggressive driving factors in the same crash. Factors include, but are not limited to, running stop signs or red lights, tailgating, careless turning or passing, and driving too fast for conditions.

To learn more about aggressive driving and other PennDOT safety initiatives, visit www.penndot.gov/safety

PennDOT's media center offers resources for safety organizations, community groups, or others who share safety information with their stakeholders. Social-media-sized graphics highlighting topics such as seat belts, impaired driving, and distracted driving can be found online at www.PennDOT.gov in the "Media Center" under the "About Us" footer.

PennDOT - District 6 News: Elmwood Avenue, Lindbergh Boulevard, Grays Avenue, 49th Street Restricted for Resurfacing Operations, Safety Improvements in Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Elmwood Avenue, Lindbergh Boulevard, Grays Avenue, 49th Street Restricted for Resurfacing Operations, Safety Improvements in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Motorists will encounter periodic lane closures on Elmwood Avenue, Lindbergh Boulevard, Grays Avenue and 49th Street in Philadelphia on Monday, October 25, through Friday, November 5, from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM, for resurfacing operations, as part of a project to repair and resurface more than 44 miles of state highways in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because slowdowns may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

PennDOT's contractor is milling the existing roadway surfaces, repaving the state highways with new asphalt, and line striping along the following corridors:

  • Elmwood Avenue between Island Avenue and Lindbergh Boulevard;
  • Lindbergh Boulevard between Elmwood Avenue and Grays Avenue;
  • Grays Avenue between Lindbergh Boulevard and 49th Street; and
  • 49th Street between Grays Avenue and Woodland Avenue.

 The new pavement will seal the roadways and provide motorists with a smoother riding surface. In addition, the contractor, through approved plans in conjunction with the City of Philadelphia, will install new crosswalks, roadway markings, delineators, and improve safety near trolley stops. Other improvements include changing the existing bike lanes on Lindbergh Boulevard, Grays Avenue and 49th Street to a two-way bike track on one side of the roadway.

Tony DePaul and Son, of Flourtown, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the $9.8 million project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

Other highways included in the project are:

  • State Road between Route 73 (Cottman Avenue) and the Bucks County line;
  • Market Street between 7th Street and Front Street;
  • University Avenue between the bridge over the Schuylkill River and U.S. 13 (Baltimore Avenue);
  • Belmont Avenue between Lancaster Avenue and U.S.1 (City Avenue);
  • Chestnut Street between Broad Street and Penn's Landing Road;
  • Essington Avenue/Passyunk Avenue between Bartram Avenue and Broad Street;
  • 16th Street between JFK Boulevard and Interstate 676;
  • Marshall Road between the bridge over Cobbs Creek and 63rd Street (Cobbs Creek Parkway);
  • 25th Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Poplar Street;
  • Cliveden Street between Park Line Drive and Lincoln Drive; and
  • Northbound and southbound Interstate 95 ramps at the Route 611 North/Broad Street Interchange.

 Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
