PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Completes Major Construction on Route 52 (Lenape Road) Bridge Rehabilitation in Birmingham Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today the completion of major construction to rehabilitate the Route 52 (Lenape Road) bridge over Brandywine Creek Floodplain in Birmingham Township, Chester County.

Route 52 (Lenape Road) between Pocopson Road and Creek Road had been closed and detoured since August 2019 for rehabilitation of the structure. Creek Road between Riverbend Lane and Country Club Road was later closed in November. Both roads are now open.

While major construction on the bridge has been completed, the contractor will be performing various minor construction activities, including traffic signal work and stone pointing operations over the next few weeks with no impact to traffic.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, and relevant training.

Under this rehabilitation project, PennDOT repaired, strengthened and restored the previously deteriorating seven-span, stone masonry arch bridge by removing the bituminous pavement and earth fill; removed and salvaged the parapet stones, capstones and pipe railing; rebuilt deteriorated portions of the spandrel and wing walls; constructed a full-width concrete slab with integral concrete barriers faced with stone from the bridge; reinstalled masonry capstones with repainted pipe railing; repointed the masonry as required; salvaged and reset the bridge plaque; and installed brown painted guide rail.

In addition, the contractor rebuilt the stone walls at the north end of the bridge at the Route 52 (Lenape Road) and Creek Road intersection and moved the walls a bit further away from the intersection to provide additional room for vehicular turning moves.

A permanent flashing yellow left turn arrow was also installed under this project on eastbound Route 926 (Street Road) for left turns onto northbound Pocopson Road.

Loftus Construction Inc., is the general contractor on the $3,439,000 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-95 Long-Term Lane Closures Begin Monday Night for Reconstruction at the Bridge Street Interchange in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Northbound and southbound Interstate 95 will be reduced from four lanes-to-three in each direction at the northern end of the Bridge Street Interchange in Philadelphia for at least two years beginning Monday night, June 29, as crews continue setting up the work zone for reconstruction of the northbound lanes between Carver Street and Levick Street starting in late summer, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Crews will work Monday, June 29, through Wednesday, July 1, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning to set temporary construction barrier, eradicate and paint new lane markings, and complete other tasks to create a work area in the middle of the interstate.

Crews may close an additional lane in either or both directions during the overnight shift, reducing I-95 in the work area to two lanes in either or both directions on Monday, June 29, through Wednesday, July 1, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 the following morning.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel through the work areas. All scheduled activities are weather permitting.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

With the barriers in place, PennDOT's contractor will remove the median barrier, pave the median, install drainage, and build crossovers for a long-term traffic pattern that, by late-summer will shift three lanes of northbound and southbound vehicles to the west (southbound) side and middle of I-95 for reconstruction of the northbound lanes three and bridges.

The pattern will be reversed in late 2021 for reconstruction of the southbound lanes and bridges at the northern end of the Bridge Street Interchange.

In addition to I-95 reconstruction, the Section BS1 contract also includes improvements to the parking area, lighting and landscaping at Lardner's Point Park on the Delaware River near Levick Street.

All on-off ramps at the I-95/Bridge Street Interchange will remain open during BS1 construction. Section BS1 is the first of two contracts to reconstruct mainline I-95 at the Bridge Street Interchange. A second mainline reconstruction project at the interchange, Section BS2, is currently in design and will move to construction following completion of Section BS1 in late 2022. PennDOT Reopens Three Bryn Mawr Avenue Bridges in Radnor Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today reopened the three bridges that carry Bryn Mawr Avenue over Meadowbrook Run and Doom Run in Radnor Township, Delaware County, following the completion of a rehabilitation project.

The three bridges include:

  • Bryn Mawr Avenue over Meadowbrook Run. The bridge is 12 feet long, 29 feet wide and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places;
  • Bryn Mawr Avenue over a tributary to Meadowbrook Run. The structure is 8 feet long and 30 feet wide; and
  • Bryn Mawr Avenue over Doom Run. The bridge is 12 feet long and 36 feet wide.
PennDOT's contractor rehabilitated the masonry arch structures and repaired the stone masonry abutment, dismantled the parapets, poured slab and concrete parapet core, faced the core wall with the existing brick and concrete cap to match the existing appearance, paved the roadway, and installed pavement markings and signs.

All three structures were built in 1905 and currently carry an average of 10,515 vehicles a day.

The completion of the three bridges now concludes a $7.7 million project to repair seven bridges in Philadelphia, Delaware and Montgomery counties.

Other structures completed under this project include:

  • Greenwood Avenue over a branch of Rock Creek in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County;
  • Eagleville Road over Eagleville Run in Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County;
  • Byberry Road over Southampton Creek in Upper Moreland Township and Bryn Athyn Borough, Montgomery County; and
  • The U.S. 13 (Frankford Avenue) bridge over Pennypack Creek in Philadelphia.
