PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT to Replace Ardmore Avenue Bridges in Haverford Township, Delaware County

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT to Replace Ardmore Avenue Bridges in Haverford Township, Delaware County

King of Prussia, PA – Ardmore Avenue is scheduled to close between Haverford Road and Golf House Road in Haverford Township, Delaware County, on Monday, July 15, through June 2020, as part of a PennDOT project to replace two bridges that carry Ardmore Avenue over Cobbs Creek and SEPTA's Norristown High-Speed Line.

This transportation improvement project is driven by the need to replace both bridges that are rated in poor condition and improvements are needed to enhance the safety and operations of the two bridges because of their age, state of deterioration and the lack of adequate shoulders and approaches to the structures.

The bridge over Cobbs Creek was built in 1935, and the structure over SEPTA tracks dates back to 1927.

During the full closure, Ardmore Avenue motorists will be detoured over Darby Road, College Avenue and Haverford Road. Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. Ardmore Avenue carries an annual average daily traffic volume of 11,700.

In addition to building two new bridges, the project will include the complete reconstruction of Ardmore Avenue between Golf House Road and Haverford Road to accommodate two four-foot-wide shoulders and two 12-foot-wide travel lanes.

PennDOT will install a temporary pedestrian bridge at the Ardmore Avenue Station for SEPTA's Norristown High Speed Line prior to the implementation of the project detour. This bridge will provide pedestrian access for both station platforms during construction.

The Norristown High Speed Line station will remain in service throughout the length of the project and motorists will be able to access the Ardmore Avenue Station parking lot via Golf View Road.

J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $9,837,500 bridge replacement project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020.

Weather permitting, the work schedule is:
  • Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane, then closed completely each night from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning between the South Street and Interstate 676 interchanges for repair and repainting of the overhead viaduct. During the closure, motorists will be directed to use the ramp from westbound I-76 to 30th Street, then follow Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp to westbound I-76 at Market Street;
  • Tuesday, July 2, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the I-676 and South Street interchanges for repair and repainting of the overhead viaduct; and
  • Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, the ramp from westbound I-76 to 30th Street will be shortened periodically for pipe work.
Motorists are advised that the scheduled 11:00 PM closure of westbound I-76 at 30th Street may be delayed to allow traffic from events at the sports and entertainment complex in South Philadelphia to clear.

Drivers are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur.

PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the I-76 viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken, just east of the Interstate 476/Conshohocken Interchange in Montgomery County. More information is available at www.I76viaduct.com.

Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is scheduled to close for one year beginning in mid-June — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street. PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT, U.S. Coast Guard, Police Remind Motorists and Boaters to Drive Sober this Upcoming Independence Day Holiday

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT, U.S. Coast Guard, Police Remind Motorists and Boaters to Drive Sober this Upcoming Independence Day Holiday

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today joined the U.S. Coast Guard, Philadelphia Police Department Marine Unit, Pennsylvania DUI Association, Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and AAA Mid-Atlantic in Philadelphia to promote safe driving, boating during an Independence Day impaired enforcement campaign.

While many people will be celebrating Independence Day festivities over the next week, it is important to remain vigilant and drive sober while operating a vehicle or vessel. Alcohol and drug use can impair a person's judgment and reaction time. Motorists who drive while impaired, whether in a car or a boat, are not only endangering themselves, but their passengers and others on the roadways and waterways.

According to PennDOT data, in 2018 there were 44 statewide fatalities from June 29 through July 8. Of those fatalities, 25 deaths were due to impaired driving; loss of life that could have been avoided. Seven lives were lost in the Philadelphia region during that time due to impaired driving. If you are heading out on our roadways or to a river on a boat, practice these safety tips:
  • Designate a nondrinking driver before festivities even begin;
  • Never operate a vehicle or water vessel while impaired;
  • Remember, it's ok to take the keys away from someone who is impaired to prevent them from driving;
  • If you are hosting, remind your guests to designate a driver, whether that is a friend, or a ride share app, such as NHTSA's SaferRide;
  • Always buckle-up in a vehicle or wear a life vest on a boat; and
  • Consider having no alcohol while aboard a boat, since intoxicated passengers are also at risk of injury and falls overboard.
The enforcement effort, which runs through July 7, is funded through PennDOT's statewide annual distribution of more than $4.7 million dollars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for impaired driving enforcement.

Motorists are advised that the Walnut Street ramp to eastbound I-76 at the 30th Street Interchange, closed on May 20 for structural repairs and resurfacing, was reopened Saturday, June 15.

Next week's scheduled overnight closings of westbound I-76 will be adjusted to start later than 11:00 PM if necessary to accommodate motorists leaving the sports complex in South Philadelphia.
