Swamp Creek Road Reopens Following Bridge Rehabilitation in Marlborough Township

King of Prussia, PA Swamp Creek Road has reopened between Geryville Pike and Payne Road in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today, following the rehabilitation of the bridge carrying Swamp Creek Road over Unami Creek.

Before the recent December closure, the Swamp Creek Road bridge was initially closed in September 2021 to repair the approach roadway due to damaged caused by Tropical Storm Ida. Approximately 203 vehicles travel across the 130-year-old, 89-foot-long, 20-foot-wide structure daily.

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) Lane Closures at Night for Two Months for Overhead Sign Construction in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA -- Northbound and southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) will be reduced from three lanes-to-two at two separate locations between Interstate 76 and the Wissahickon Avenue/Hunting Park Avenue Exit in Philadelphia for approximately two months beginning Monday, April 4, for overhead sign demolition and installation, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Crews will work on Monday, April 4, through Thursday, April 7, to establish two additional work areas on the northbound side and two additional work areas on the southbound side. Motorists will encounter southbound lane restrictions each night from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, and northbound lane restrictions from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning while workers set construction barriers and paint new lane markings to create protected work areas in both direction at each sign location.

The sign work is part of the $92.4 million project to rehabilitate U.S.1 (Roosevelt Expressway) Wayne Junction Viaduct over SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown Neighborhood.

The new, temporary work zones will be situated south of the existing work zone that is in place for the viaduct rehabilitation, where Stage 4 construction is currently underway on the northbound inner lane of the mile-long structure until mid-2022.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays are expected.  Westbound I-76 motorists heading for northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) should remain alert for slow or stopped traffic approaching the work area.

More project information is available on the U.S. 1 Viaduct Rehabilitation Project website.

PennDOT - District 6 News: Route 372 (Lower Valley Road) Lane Closure Next Week for Pavement Repair in Atglen Borough, West Sadsbury Township

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Route 372 (Lower Valley Road) Lane Closure Next Week for Pavement Repair in Atglen Borough, West Sadsbury Township

King of Prussia, PA – Route 372 (Lower Valley Road) motorists will encounter a lane closure with flagging next week approaching the Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) intersection on Monday, March 28, through Friday, April 1, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for pavement patching and repair under a project to replace the bridge that carries Route 372 (Lower Valley Road) over Officers Run in Atglen Borough and West Sadsbury Township, Chester County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur due to these operations. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Originally built in 1937, the existing two-span reinforced concrete slab bridge is listed in poor condition, showing extensive cracking and other damage. The new Route 372 (Lower Valley Road) structure will be a single-span prestressed concrete composite adjacent box beam bridge which includes approach roadway construction.

The purpose of this project is to provide a long-term transportation facility that is structurally sound, capable of handling the volume of expected traffic along this state highway and to ensure a safe and efficient crossing along a locally important network.

This project also includes the realignment and restriping of the Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) painted median and replacement of the traffic signal at the Route 372 (Lower Valley Road) and Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) intersection. Other project improvements include pipe culvert installation, aerial and underground gas utility relocations and wetland enhancements.

During construction, a stream crossing and temporary roadway with a reduced speed of 25 mph will be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge to accommodate temporary two-way traffic.

Additionally, short-term lane closures and traffic signal adjustments at the intersection of Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and Route 372 (Lower Valley Road) will also be utilized during construction.

Mumford and Miller Concrete, Inc., of Middletown, Delaware is the general contractor on the $2.9 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in spring 2023.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com or downloading the 511PA mobile application. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin Monday, April 4, on a project to construct a new ramp from Cottman Avenue (Route 73) to southbound Interstate 95 in the Tacony neighborhood of Philadelphia and perform roadway and utility improvements in the area of the interchange.

"We're eager to put the finishing touches on this third and final contract to reconstruct and improve mainline I-95, the ramps and surface streets in the vicinity of the Cottman Avenue Interchange," Acting PennDOT District 6 Executive Lou Belmonte said.

In addition to building a new ramp from Cottman Avenue to southbound I-95, PennDOT, the City of Philadelphia and project stakeholders identified additional improvements needed in the area to complete the I-95 Section CP3 project.

These improvements include:

  • Reconstructing Wissinoming Street;
  • Constructing left-turn lanes at the New State Road/Magee Avenue intersection;
  • Improving pedestrian and bicycle facilities on Princeton Avenue;
  • Constructing a retaining wall to support the new on-ramp;
  • Upgrading traffic signals at the New State Road/Elbridge Street, New State Road/Magee Avenue, State Road/Princeton Avenue, and State Road/Cottman Avenue intersections;
  • Constructing permanent speed tables on "Old" State Road;
  • Removing abandoned rail sidings, resurfacing, and constructing additional sidewalks on Milnor Street;
  • Performing landscape enhancements in the Milnor Street/Princeton Avenue area;
  • Upgrading lighting to LED;
  • Paving railroad siding area under the I-95/Bleigh Avenue overpass;
  • Painting vertical concrete surfaces; and
  • Relocating a sanitary sewer culvert.

Over the two years of construction that begins Monday, April 4, there will be periodic off-peak travel restrictions and pedestrian posted detours on surface streets around and approaching the I-95/Cottman Avenue Interchange, including New State Road and its intersections at Magee Avenue and Unruh Street, and State Road and its intersections with Cottman Avenue and Princeton Avenue. Construction to improve Elbridge Street and Levick Street at the Tacony Palmyra Bridge also will require periodic off-peak lane restrictions at those locations.

There will be archaeological monitoring during excavations for the sanitary sewer culvert. Vertical concrete surfaces, such as abutments, retaining walls and bridge barriers, that were not painted in the I-95 Section CP2 project, will be painted under this contract.

C. Abbonizio Contractors, Inc. of Sewell, N.J., is the general contractor on the $52.7 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Construction on the entire project is expected to finish in spring 2024.

Route 663 (King Street) at Manatawny Street to Close Next Weekend for Bridge Construction in Pottstown Borough

King of Prussia, PA – The Route 663 (King Street) and Manatawny Street Intersection in Pottstown Borough, Montgomery County will be closed and detoured from 7:00 PM Friday, April 1, to 7:00 PM Sunday, April 3, for final construction activities under the project to replace the Route 663 (King Street) bridge over Manatawny Creek, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

If weather postpones next weekend's operations, construction will take place during the week of April 4.

During the closure, motorists will be directed to use High Street or Beech Street, Hanover Street, Route 724 (Schuylkill Road) and Route 100 (Pottstown Pike).

Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur.

The scope of work on this project includes enhancements to roadside protection at the approaches to the new bridge barriers; wider sidewalks on both sides of the bridge; and new ADA curb ramps at the intersection of Route 663 (King Street) and Manatawny Street. Decorative bridge lighting is also being added to improve visibility.

Rylind Construction Company of Lewisberry, PA is the general contractor on the $4.2 million project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to finish this spring.
