PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Announces Regional Paint the Plow Contest Winner

King of Prussia, PA –  The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that a team of students from Unionville-Chadds Ford High School, Chester County has been selected as the PennDOT District 6 winner for the 2018 Paint the Plow contest.

Five Chester County high schools participated in this year's contest: Downingtown East; Octorara; Unionville-Chadds Ford; Conestoga; and West Chester East. Each participating school was delivered a PennDOT plow blade in early September to decorate incorporating the winter safety theme "Slow in the Snow".

In addition to the winter safety theme, students were encouraged to include patriotic, or weather-related themes, as well as their school's logo, emblem, or mascot into the design. In the end, it was Unionville High School's snowy farm scene that won the popular vote by getting the highest number of likes through a Facebook online voting campaign open to the public.

Paint the Plow is a statewide community outreach program in which students are invited to paint a PennDOT snow plow blade with original artwork to represent their individual school. In addition to being visible when in full service during the winter-weather months, the blades will be used within the school's community to enhance public awareness, promote safety, and foster greater appreciation of both PennDOT and the school's art program.

The Paint the Plow Project began in 2015 in District 9 and has since spread across the state. Since its start, this program had not been offered in District 6, with 2018 being its inaugural year, headed up by County Manager Bob Kennedy in Chester County.

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 1, Route 132 (Street Road) Lane Closures at Night Next Week for Temporary Paving in Bensalem Township, Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA –  Right lane closures will be in place on U.S. 1 and Route 132 (Street Road) on Sunday, December 2, through Friday, December 7, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning for temporary paving operations on a project to reconstruct, widen and improve a 1.3-mile section of the highway in Bensalem Township, Bucks County.

The work locations are:
  • Northbound and southbound U.S. 1 between Old Lincoln Highway and Rockhill Drive; and
  • Westbound Route 132 (Street Road) between Kingston Way and Old Lincoln Highway.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

This corridor improvement project is the first of three construction contracts to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of the City of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough. Improvements under this first contract include:
  • Constructing a third travel lane along U.S. 1 in each direction from the Route 132 (Street Road) interchange to just north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange;
  • Building an auxiliary lane along U.S 1 in each direction between the Route 132 (Street Road) and Pennsylvania Turnpike interchanges;
  • Raising the profile of U.S. 1 from south of the Route 132 (Street Road) Interchange to north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange to improve vertical clearances for U.S. 1 structures over Route 132 (Street Road), the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange ramps;
  • Upgrading U.S. 1 interchanges at Route 132 (Street Road) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike;
  • Adding a northbound right-turn lane along U.S. 1 from Old Lincoln Highway to Route 132 (Street Road);
  • Reconfiguring the Route 132 (Street Road) Interchange and adding a ramp from Route 132 (Street Road) eastbound to U.S. 1 southbound;
  • Increasing the existing loop ramp radius to improve design speed to 30 miles-per-hour and incorporating a second lane on the U.S 1 northbound exit ramp to the Pennsylvania Turnpike;
  • Removing the existing bridge that carries U.S. 1 over a closed private access road; and
  • Reconstructing four bridges.
Additionally, this project includes the construction of a sound barrier and retaining wall; installation of 13 sign structures, traffic signals and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment along the corridor; relocation of sanitary sewer and water service lines; upgrades to drainage and stormwater systems; and construction of on-site and off-site mitigation sites.

The project will begin with utility relocations, upgrades and minor improvements to facilitate traffic during the three main construction stages beginning in spring 2019.

Initial activities this fall and winter include temporary reconstruction and widening of existing shoulders along U.S. 1 and Route 132 (Street Road); installation of a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Route 132 (Street Road) and Township Road; the extension of Township Road to several local businesses on U.S. 1; and construction of new driveway configurations for the Red Roof Inn. Additionally, stormwater system improvements and stream mitigation activities will commence in various locations along the corridor.

In early 2019, reconstruction of existing northbound U.S. 1 and the bridges will begin, as well as construction to replace and improve the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Route 132 (Street Road) interchange ramps adjacent to northbound U.S. 1. Concurrently, the contractor will begin rebuilding eastbound Route 132 (Street Road) and incorporate two new ramps adjacent to eastbound traffic for the realignment of the U.S. 1 Interchange at Route 132 (Street Road).

Allan A. Myers, Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $97,352,764 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. All work on this project is expected to complete by the end of 2022.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT, Police, Safety Partners Launch ‘Operation Safe Holiday’ Campaign Across Southeast Pennsylvania

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT, Police, Safety Partners Launch 'Operation Safe Holiday' Campaign Across Southeast Pennsylvania

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police, Montgomery County District Attorney, Montgomery County Health and Human Services and AAA Mid-Atlantic held an event today at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell to outline regional impaired-driving and safety efforts during 'Operation Safe Holiday', a campaign to promote safe driving through the holiday season.

"We want to encourage everyone to drive safe and sober this holiday season," says PennDOT District 6 Executive, Kenneth M. McClain. "This is a time of year to have happy memories, not a time to be put in jail, get hurt, or even killed because you decided to get behind the wheel impaired."

PennDOT data indicates that the winter holiday season continues to be the leading time period for traffic crashes. In 2017, there were 1,631 crashes and 13 fatalities in the Philadelphia region during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year travel periods. Of those, 184 crashes and 9 fatalities were impaired-driving related.

PennDOT encourages motorists to plan ahead before heading out for Holiday festivities by doing the following:
  • If you decide to drink, make sure you have a non-drinking friend as a designated driver or arrange for alternate transportation;
  • Decide to be a non-drinking designated driver, and do not let your friends drive impaired;
  • If you have been drinking and do not have a designated driver, call a taxi, use Uber or mass transit;
  • If you are hosting a party, never allow your guests to leave unless they are going home with a sober driver; and
  • Always wear your seatbelt, whether you are the passenger or a non-drinking designated driver.
The Pennsylvania State Police and hundreds of municipal police departments statewide will participate in the "Operation Safe Holiday" campaign this year to increase traffic safety enforcement through the New Year's holiday.

For more information on 'Operation Safe Holiday', #PASafeHoliday, and PennDOT's other safety initiatives, visit www.penndot.gov/safety.

On Wednesday, December 5, through Friday, December 7, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, and to 9:00 AM Saturday, December 8, northbound U.S. 202 will be reduced from two-lanes-to-one between the Boot Road and Route 401 interchanges, and the ramp from eastbound U.S. 30/Exton Bypass to northbound U.S. 202 will be closed.

King of Prussia, PA – Weekday lane restrictions are scheduled in both directions on Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) between Black Horse Road and Route 23 (Ridge Road) in Upper Uwchlan, West Vincent, East Nantmeal and South Coventry townships, Chester County, on Monday, December 3, through Friday, December 7, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for drainage and roadway work related to a project to improve traffic flow and safety along a 6.3-mile section of Route 100 (Pottstown Pike), the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work zone because slowdowns and backups will occur during construction. The contractor's schedule is weather dependent.

As part of this project, crews are working to improve the stretch of Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) between Garrison Drive and Route 23 (Ridge Road). The scope of work includes constructing two shoulder-widening pull-offs; installing pavement markings, rumble strips, and guide rail; and resurfacing the corridor with an open-graded surface treatment (NovaChip) to increase friction and reduce hydroplaning.

In addition, PennDOT's contractor is improving the intersection of Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) and Route 23 (Ridge Road) by constructing a dedicated northbound left-turn lane as well as updating traffic signals.

Allan A. Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the $5.6 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to be completed later this year.
