PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT Highlights National Heatstroke Prevention Day to Remind Motorists to Never Leave Children and Pets Alone in Automobiles

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Highlights National Heatstroke Prevention Day to Remind Motorists to Never Leave Children and Pets Alone in Automobiles

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is highlighting National Heatstroke Prevention Day, July 31, by reminding motorists to never leave children and pets in or near automobiles, especially on hot days where the temperatures inside cars can reach lethal levels.

"Temperatures in vehicles on hotter days can increase to dangerous levels in very little time, and leaving a child or a pet in that circumstance can mean the difference between life or death," says PennDOT District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain, P.E. "If you are leaving your vehicle for a quick errand, make sure your children and pets are never left behind in your car."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 52 children lost their lives in 2018 due to either being left in an automobile or becoming trapped. As of July 26, of this year, 21 such deaths have occurred nationwide. The leading cause of heatstroke deaths was because a caregiver had meant to or thought they dropped a child at day care or preschool but had forgotten about the child.

Tips to help families avoid this unimaginable circumstance:

  • Stay alert and always be aware of your children in the back seat.
  • Leave a package or a personal item you need for the day in the backseat with the child, so you are prompted to open the back door as soon as you park.
  • Create an electronic reminder for yourself to check on the kids before you lock the car.
  • Always look before you lock to make sure no children or pets are forgotten.
The second leading cause of heatstroke deaths in automobiles is children being trapped or getting into unattended vehicles. Caregivers and neighbors should get into the habit of locking their car doors when they are unattended, so children never have access.

Pennsylvania's newly passed "Good Samaritan" law protects citizens from liability for rescuing children left alone in hot vehicles if they made a good faith effort to contact the vehicle's owner and emergency responders. Last year a similar law went into effect for pets that allows police officers and first responders to enter a hot vehicle to save the life of a dog or cat.

PennDOT - District 6 News: Chestnut Street Bridge Over the Schuylkill River to Close August 5 for One Year of Construction in Center City Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Chestnut Street Bridge Over the Schuylkill River to Close August 5 for One Year of Construction in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – The Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia is scheduled to close Monday night, August 5, for a year of construction to repair and redeck the 62-year-old eastbound connection between University City and Center City, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The bridge is scheduled to close sometime after 8:00 PM, closing Chestnut Street to vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians between Schuylkill Avenue near 30th Street on the west side of the river and 23rd Street on the east side. Access from Chestnut Street to the Schuylkill River Trail along the east bank of the river also will close.

During the closure, motorists and cyclists heading east from West Philadelphia will be detoured north on either 38th Street, 36th Street or 33rd Street to east on Market Street, then across the river to 23rd Street.

Chestnut Street motorists in the vicinity of 30th Street also may turn left on Schuylkill Avenue to access either eastbound Market Street or John F. Kennedy Boulevard across the river to Center City.

An alternate detour for cyclists will be to take 38th Street or 34th Street south, turn left on Spruce Street, then east on South Street across the river to 22nd Street.

Pedestrians will be detoured to either the Market Street or Walnut Street bridges over the river.

PennDOT is rehabilitating the Chestnut Street bridge under a $103.6 million project that also includes the rehabilitation of seven other nearby structures, including two Schuylkill Avenue viaducts over I-76 between Market Street and Walnut Street; the viaduct under Chestnut Street between 30th and 31st streets; the I-76 west ramp to Chestnut Street; the Walnut Street ramp to I-76 east; and the Chestnut Street stone arch bridges over 24th Street and over the CSX rail line west of 24th Street. The contract also includes repairs to a 900-foot section of the "river wall" retaining wall between the river and I-76, and to a retaining wall between the Schuylkill River Trail and the river at Chestnut Street.

Work on the two ramps has been completed. Construction will continue on the remaining five bridges and retaining walls through 2020.

In addition to repairing and repainting the steel superstructure and replacing the deck, improvements to the Chestnut Street Bridge also include:
  • Construction of wider sidewalks;
  • Installation of decorative barrier and railings;
  • Replacement of millennium lighting on Chestnut Street over the Schuylkill River;
  • Construction of a new trellis at the Chestnut Street Trailhead to the Schuylkill River Trail; and
  • Creation of a dedicated bicycle lane on the north side of Chestnut Street between 34th Street and 22nd Street.
The Chestnut Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River, which carries approximately 18,664 vehicles per day is expected to reopen in August 2020. The current bridge was built in 1957, replacing the original iron arch bridge that was built in 1912.

Buckley & Company Inc., of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. More information is available at www.chestnutstreetbridges.com.

PennDOT - District 6 News: Wolf Administration Announces Start of Construction to Rehabilitate Route 52 (Lenape Road) Bridge in Birmingham Township

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Wolf Administration Announces Start of Construction to Rehabilitate Route 52 (Lenape Road) Bridge in Birmingham Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Wolf Administration announced today that the Route 52 (Lenape Road) bridge over the Brandywine Creek Floodplain in Birmingham Township, Chester County, is scheduled to close for rehabilitation on Monday, August 19, through May 2020.

"This bridge rehabilitation will provide needed safety improvements to motorists while maintaining its historical integrity and aesthetics," said Governor Tom Wolf.

PennDOT will repair, strengthen and restore the deteriorating seven-span, stone masonry arch bridge by removing the bituminous pavement and earth fill; removing and salvaging the parapet stones, capstones and pipe railing; rebuilding deteriorated portions of the spandrel and wing walls; constructing a full-width concrete slab with integral concrete barriers faced with stone from the bridge; reinstalling masonry capstones with repainted pipe railing; repointing the masonry as required; salvaging and resetting the bridge plaque; and installing brown painted guide rail.

In addition, the contractor will rebuild the stone walls at the north end of the bridge at the Route 52 (Lenape Road) and Creek Road intersection and move the walls a bit further away from the intersection to provide additional room for vehicular turning moves.

Built in 1912, this stone masonry bridge is 342 feet long and 24 feet wide stone.

On Monday, August 19, Route 52 (Lenape Road) will close between Pocopson Road and Creek Road. During the closure, Route 52 (Lenape Road) motorists will be detoured over Pocopson Road, Route 926 (Street Road) and Birmingham Road.

Before the closure and detour is implemented, traffic signal work, including timing modifications, will take place at the intersections listed below, with limited impact to motorists:

  • Temporary advanced left turn light to be installed on eastbound Route 926 (Street Road) at Birmingham Road;
  • Temporary advanced left turn light to be installed on southbound Route 52 (Lenape Road) at Birmingham Road; and
  • Permanent flashing yellow left turn arrow to be installed on eastbound Route 926 (Street Road) for left turns onto northbound Pocopson Road.

As construction progresses, Creek Road will also close for approximately seven months later this year, between Route 926 (Street Road) and Route 52 (Lenape Road). During the closure, Creek Road motorists will be detoured over Route 926 (Street Road), Birmingham Road and Route 52 (Lenape Road).

Local access will be maintained up to the work zone for both closures. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent and subject to change.

Loftus Construction Inc., is the general contractor on the $3,439,000 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to finish in summer 2020.

PennDOT - District 6 News: I-76 East Lane Restrictions, Full Closures This Weekend for Viaduct Rehabilitation, Paving in Center City Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 East Lane Restrictions, Full Closures This Weekend for Viaduct Rehabilitation, Paving in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Eastbound Interstate 76 in Center City Philadelphia will be closed overnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 26-28, and restricted to a single lane during the day Saturday and Sunday, July 27-28, for repairs and repaving of a section of the Schuylkill Expressway viaduct between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

In addition to the weekend closures, eastbound and westbound I-76 will be restricted to a single lane overnight next week between the 30th Street and Interstate 676 interchanges for painting of the overhead viaduct.

Weather permitting, the work schedule is:
  • Friday, July 26, from 11:00 PM to 10:00 AM the following morning, eastbound I-76 will be closed between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges for paving;
  • Saturday, July 27, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges, then closed completely until 10:00 AM Sunday, July 28 for repair and paving;
  • Sunday, July 28, from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges, then closed completely from 9:00 PM until 5:00 AM Monday, July 29, for repair and paving;
  • Monday, July 29, through Thursday, August 1, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the I-676 and South Street interchanges for overhead structure painting;
  • Monday, July 29, through Friday, August 2, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and I-676 interchanges for overhead structure painting; and
  • Monday, July 29, Through Friday, August 2, from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, the ramp from westbound I-76 to 30th Street will be shortened periodically for concrete placement under the viaduct.
During the full closure of eastbound I-76, motorists will be directed to exit at 30th Street, follow 30th Street around the station, turn right on Market Street, left on 38th Street and straight on University Avenue to 34th Street to access the ramp to eastbound I-76.

In addition, the ramp to eastbound I-76 at Walnut Street will be closed from 9:00 PM Friday, July 26, to 5:00 AM Monday, July 29, during the weekend repair and paving operations on eastbound I-76.

During the ramp closure, motorists will be directed to follow Walnut Street, turn left on 38th Street and go straight on University Avenue to 34th Street and the ramp to eastbound I-76.
All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Motorists are advised that the paving schedule may change based on weather forecasts because the paving material being used on the I-76 viaduct is a synthetic concrete (Polyester Polymer Concrete) that must be applied under dry conditions. The PPC material is being used because the synthetic concrete cures faster, allowing the viaduct's surface to be rehabilitated while minimizing the need for long-term lane closures that are required for curing conventional concrete pavement.

Drivers are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas during the lane closures because significant backups and delays will occur.

PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the I-76 viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken Borough, just east of the Interstate 476/Conshohocken Interchange in Montgomery County. More information is available at www.I76viaduct.com.

Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is scheduled to close for one year beginning in mid-June — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street. More information is available at www.chestnutstreetbridges.com.
