Lane Restrictions Scheduled on U.S. 1 in Bucks County for Overhead Bridge Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation
12/29/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced
that
lane restrictions are scheduled on northbound and southbound U.S. 1 between
Interstate 95 and Stony Hill Road in Falls, Middletown, and Lower Makefield
townships, Bucks County, on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, through Friday,
January
6, 2017, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for overhead bridge rehabilitation of the
Oxford Valley Road bridge over U.S. 1.
Crews began construction on November 14, 2016 to rehabilitate the Oxford
Valley
Road bridge. The bridge remains open to traffic while the contractor
repairs
structural damage sustained when the bridge was struck by an oversized
truck on
June 29, 2015. Crews will replace two steel beams and repair three steel
beams.
Construction on the bridge is scheduled to finish in June 2017.
The three span, steel-I beam bridge was built in 1972. It is 167 feet long
and
90 feet wide. The bridge is not structurally deficient or posted with a
weight
limit. The structure carries 16,000 vehicles a day.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the
construction area because slowdowns may occur.
This work is part of PennDOT's $11,766,000 project to replace six
structurally
deficient culverts in Bucks, Chester and Delaware counties, and
rehabilitate
four structurally deficient bridges in Bucks, Chester, Montgomery, and
Philadelphia counties.
Under this project, the contractor also will replace deteriorated culverts
at
the following locations: State Road bridge over a branch of Cooks Creek in
Springfield Township, Bucks County; Rocky Ridge Road over a branch of
Tohickon
Creek, Richland Township, Bucks County; White Horse Road over a branch of
Pickering Creek in Schuylkill Township, Chester County; Route 282 (Creek
Road)
over a branch of Brandywine Creek in East Brandywine Township, Chester
County;
Route 82 (Doe Run Road) over a branch of Cooks Creek in East Fallowfield
Township, Chester County; and MacDade Boulevard over the Muckinipattis
Creek in
Glenolden Borough, Delaware County.
PennDOT is currently rehabilitating the Route 663 (Layfield Road) bridge
over
the Perkiomen Creek in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County. Crews are
rehabilitating the five-span structure by replacing the bridge deck. The
Route
663 (Layfield Road) bridge is closed and detoured until August 2017.
In addition, the contract includes concrete and sub-structure repairs on
the
Edenton Road bridge over Rattlesnake Run in Upper Oxford Township, Chester
County, and the Torresdale Avenue bridge over Academy Road in Philadelphia.
Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor
on
this bridge improvement contract that is financed with 100 percent state
funds
through Act 89, Pennsylvania's transportation plan.
All work on the project is expected to be completed in August 2018.

Governor Wolf Announces 511PAConnect to Keep Stranded Motorists Safe, Informed
Informed
12/22/2016-HARRISBURG
Governor Tom Wolf today announced the launch of 511PAConnect, a new
initiative
that will provide information updates to motorists in the event of a
long-term
road closure due to accidents on the Pennsylvania Turnpike or other state
roadways. Following last year's significant trapped queue during Winter
Storm
Jonas, Wolf tasked state agencies to develop a tool to better keep drivers
informed in similar situations in the future.
"People being stuck on roadways due to an accident isn't a new problem, but
we're using modern technology to keep motorists informed about the status
of
accident cleanup and highway reopening," said Governor Wolf. "This
connection
with motorists will also allow us to have a clearer picture of who is
sitting
in a vehicle and where they are, so we can better plan for the use of our
resources."
Wolf said when personnel from the PA Turnpike and PennDOT identify a
potential
long-term closure, they will notify staff at the 24-hour Commonwealth Watch
and
Warning Center at the PA Emergency Management Agency, who will issue an
initial
location-based alert to motorists in the area of the closure. Law
enforcement
also uses the alerting system to issue Amber Alerts for missing children.
"This system will only be used for emergencies that will last for a
sustained
period," said PEMA Director Richard D. Flinn Jr. "It is important for
motorists
to recognize that the system will only work in areas with cell phone
service,
and that this is not a substitute for calling 9-1-1 if you have an actual
emergency in your vehicle."
Motorists who receive the alert will have the option of registering for
automatic text messages or phone call updates. Follow-up notifications will
be
generated by Turnpike and PennDOT staff monitoring the closure. Once the
incident is resolved, motorists who registered for the alerts will
automatically be unsubscribed and all personal data will be scrubbed from
the
system.
"This new 511PAConnect initiative helps PennDOT in its mission to serve
drivers
regardless of weather or road conditions that may impede travel," said
Department of Transportation Secretary Leslie S. Richards. "While we hope
we
never have to use it, drivers will now have rapid communications on
conditions
when emergencies or major incidents impact their travel."
"We certainly recognize that it can be stressful for travelers caught in an
extended roadway closure, not knowing where they are, worrying how long
they
may have to sit there," said PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. "At a time like
that, just knowing someone is out there who is aware of your predicament
can be
a comfort; and the updates and life-safety messages we push out through
this
tool help to make stranded travelers feel connected."
PennDOT and the Turnpike offer a variety of tools to keep travelers
informed
during all levels of incidents — including the 511PA smartphone app, phone
number, online sources and social media platforms — but 511PAConnect is the
first initiative of its kind to link directly to a targeted group of
travelers
who are being impacted by, or who are approaching, a large-scale emergency.
Governor Wolf also said motorists should maintain a small stash of
emergency
supplies in their cars year-round. A basic emergency kit should include
non-perishable food and water and a cell phone charger, and any specialized
supplies such as baby or pet care items, as well as items appropriate for
the
weather such as a blanket, small shovel or rain gear.
Free emergency kit checklists for your vehicle or home and family emergency
plan templates are available online at www.ReadyPA.org.

PennDOT Resurfaced Nearly 200 Miles of State Highway in Philadelphia Region in 2016
in 2016
12/22/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
Nearly 200 miles of state highway in the five-county Philadelphia region
were
resurfaced in 2016 as part of an aggressive program to repair deteriorated
pavements and provide drivers with smoother roads, the Pennsylvania
Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
"PennDOT crews and contractors deserve a tremendous amount of credit for
the
amount of highway miles they sealed and repaired over the last year to
provide
drivers with more reliable and safer riding surfaces," said PennDOT
District
Executive Kenneth M. McClain.
PennDOT paved 194 miles of state highway this year in Bucks, Chester,
Delaware,
Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, primarily under 25 state paving
contracts
totaling $55 million. Twelve of the resurfacing contracts were financed
with
state funds from Act 89, Pennsylvania's transportation plan.
PennDOT maintenance crews also performed crack sealing on 1,150 miles of
state
highways in the Philadelphia region in 2016. "Crack sealing is one of our
top
maintenance strategies to prevent premature deterioration of the roadway
and
extend the life of asphalt surfaces by restricting water penetration into
underlying base and sub-base layers," said McClain. Crews performed a
considerable amount of crack sealing operations during overnight hours to
improve efficiency and reduce traffic impacts for motorists.
In addition, PennDOT crews and private contractors placed 35,114 tons of
asphalt patching material on state highways in the Philadelphia region this
year to repair pavements that absorbed structural damage following the
winter
of 2015-16. Crews performed manual patching, spray patching, and milling
and
paving.
PennDOT is currently developing its 2017 resurfacing program in the
Philadelphia region, which will begin in April when temperature are warm
enough
for paving activities.
In addition to resurfacing projects, PennDOT completed major construction
on
the following highway improvement projects in 2016:
• $63 million project to reconstruct and widen 2.5 miles of U.S. 202 to six
lanes between the Route 401 and U.S. 30 interchanges in East Whiteland
Township, Chester County, which completed the expansion of 6.5 miles of
U.S.
202 to six lanes in East Whiteland and Tredyffrin townships;
• $36.5 million project to reconstruct 4.3 miles of U.S. 13 (Bristol Pike)
between Route 413 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bristol Township, Bucks
County;
• $11 million project to realign and widen U.S. 202 from East State Street
to
just north of Route 313 (Swamp Road) in Doylestown Borough and Buckingham
and
Doylestown townships, Bucks County; and
• $5 million project to widen Route 252 (Providence Road) between Palmers
Mill
Road and Kirk Lane in Upper Providence Township, Delaware County.

Township, Montgomery County
12/21/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will start major construction
Monday, January 9, on a $3.6 million project to rehabilitate the
structurally
deficient bridge carrying Edge Hill Road over Route 611 (Old York Road) in
Abington Township, Montgomery County.
Due to nature of the bridge repairs and to expedite the project, Edge Hill
Road
will be closed and detoured between Ferndale Avenue and Hamilton Avenue
through
the completion of construction scheduled in late fall 2017.
Edge Hill Road passenger vehicles will be detoured over Susquehanna Road,
Fitzwatertown Road and Old Welsh Road. Trucks will be detoured over
Jenkintown
Road, Fitzwatertown Road and Old Welsh. Pedestrian traffic will be
maintained
for the duration of construction and local vehicular access will be
maintained
up to the construction area.
Construction on the Edge Hill Road bridge will entail replacing the
existing
superstructure which includes the concrete deck slab. Crews will also
repair
the support abutments, install new sidewalks and make repairs to the
existing
pedestrian stairways.
The one-span, structurally-deficient, steel girder bridge was built in
1947. It
is 115 feet long and 37 feet wide. The structure is posted with a weight
limit
of 31 tons and a combination weight limit of 35 tons. The bridge carries an
average of 7,138 vehicles a day.
J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on

PennDOT to Open I-95 to Four Through Lanes in Each Direction Between Cottman Avenue and Bridge Street
Cottman Avenue and Bridge Street
12/21/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today
that
Interstate 95 will open to four through lanes tonight, December 21, between
the
Cottman Avenue and Bridge Street interchanges in Northeast Philadelphia,
marking the end of mainline construction on a $212 million project to widen
and
reconstruct 1.4 miles of I-95 between Bleigh Avenue and Levick Street.
PennDOT began construction in late 2012 to rebuild and expand I-95 to
create a
fourth through lane in each direction at the Cottman Avenue (Route 73)
Interchange. The improvement project also included replacing seven
structurally
deficient bridges on the interstate; upgrading four existing ramps;
constructing 13 retaining walls; and installing storm water drainage pipes
and
Intelligent Transportation equipment. Next year, crews will complete work
to
extend Princeton Avenue east to Milnor Street, reconstruct New State Road,
install a storm water drainage pipe along Bleigh Avenue, resurface adjacent
intersections, and complete other related construction activities. The
project
is expected to finish in fall 2017.
Crews have worked the past several days to complete line painting and
barrier
removal, and install safety rumble strips along I-95. They also removed
barriers to fully open the rebuilt and widened I-95 north exit ramp to
Cottman
Avenue (Route 73) as well as the rebuilt and widened two-lane entrance ramp
from Princeton Avenue to I-95 north.
The contractor will work today to complete final adjustments on northbound
and
southbound I-95 and remove construction barrels to fully open the highway
to
four through lanes between Bridge Street and Cottman Avenue.
Walsh Construction Company II, LLC of Canonsburg, Pa. is the general
contractor
on the
$212,325,000 project, which is financed with 90 percent federal and 10
percent
state funds.
PennDOT continues to rebuild I-95 north of Center City Philadelphia as
construction is currently underway to reconstruct and improve I-95 at the
Girard Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge/ Aramingo Avenue interchanges.
Additional
contracts heading for construction in 2017 and beyond include further work
at
those two interchanges, plus the initial stages of rebuilding and improving
the
Bridge Street and Allegheny Avenue/Castor Avenue interchanges and adjacent
segments of I-95.

Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
The work schedule is:

following morning, alternating northbound and southbound single and double

and
