PennDOT to Improve Bryn Mawr Avenue Bridge in Radnor Township, Delaware
County
5/31/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today
that
construction is underway to rehabilitate the bridge carrying Bryn Mawr
Avenue
over Ithan Creek in Radnor Township, Delaware County. During this
operation,
one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. Work
on
the bridge is scheduled to be completed in December.
PennDOT's contractor will rehabilitate the structure by replacing the box
beams
and bridge barrier; installing new guide rail; repairing the substructure;
and
resurfacing the approach roadway.
The Bryn Mawr Avenue bridge over Ithan Creek was built in 1964. The
single-span
concrete box beam bridge is 28 feet long, 45 feet wide and carries an
average
of 10,411 vehicles a day.
The structure is one of eight bridges in Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery and
Philadelphia counties that PennDOT is repairing under a $7,555,555 project
financed by Act 89, the state's transportation plan.
PennDOT has completed the rehabilitations of the U.S. 13 (Bristol Pike)
bridge
over Martins Creek in Falls Township, Bucks County; Chinquapin Road bridge
over
Iron Works Creek in Northampton Township, Bucks County; Dark Hollow Road
bridge
over Tohickon Creek in Tinicum Township, Bucks County; Route 32 (South Main
Street) bridge over Aquetong Creek in New Hope Borough, Bucks County; Route
73
(Skippack Pike) bridge over Perkiomen Creek in Perkiomen and Skippack
townships, and Schwenksville Borough, Montgomery County; and the Broad
Street
(Route 611) bridge over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) in Philadelphia.
The remaining bridge to be repaired under this contract is the New Second
Street bridge over Tacony Creek in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County.
Construction to rehabilitate that structure is expected to begin this
summer.
Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor
on
the project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

Governor Wolf, PennDOT Announce 2017 Highway Improvements in Southeast Pennsylvania
Governor Wolf, PennDOT Announce 2017 Highway Improvements in Southeast
Pennsylvania
5/30/2017-NORRISTOWN
Governor Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
(PennDOT)
today announced that over $550 million in highway and bridge improvements
will
begin or be bid across the Philadelphia region during the 2017 construction
season, bringing the region's total contract work this year to roughly 125
projects worth $2.2 billion.
"The funding allocated for these projects not only reduces the backlog of
Pennsylvania's pavement and bridge demands, but significantly improves the
growing need for better mobility and safety on our roadways," Governor Wolf
said. "This major investment in our infrastructure that will greatly
improve
our vast transportation network, enhance local communities and generate
more
robust economies across the state."
The announcement was made on a site within the Lafayette Street Extension
Project, a $95 million project that will spur economic redevelopment in
Norristown and strengthen one of Plymouth Township's busy retail and
industrial
centers.
Overall highlights in the 2017 construction season for PennDOT's District 6
(Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties) include:
• approximately 235 miles of paving; and
• approximately 33 bridges will be repaired or replaced.
"The infusion of additional funding through Act 89 has allowed us to move
critical projects into construction that will help extend the service life
of
our highways and bridges, improve safety and strengthen our infrastructure
for
future generations," District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain said.
Notable projects that have recently moved into construction include:
• I-95 Betsy Ross Ramps/Adams Avenue Connector in Philadelphia ($81
million);
• U.S. 322 widening in Delaware County ($62.6 million);
• U.S. 202 bridges over Amtrak in Chester County ($26.4 million);
• Route 452 bridge replacement in Delaware County ($19.9 million);
• I-95 overhead bridges in Delaware County ($16.6 million);
• JFK Boulevard bridge rehabilitations in Philadelphia ($15.9 million);
• Pottstown signal system improvements in Montgomery County ($13.3
million);
• U.S 13 (Bristol Pike) resurfacing in Bucks County ($3 million); and
• Route 41/Newark Road Intersection improvement in Chester County ($1.4
million).
Notable projects that are expected to be bid this year include:
• I-95 GR4 in Philadelphia (estimated $278 million);
• Chestnut Street bridges in Philadelphia (apparent low bid $103.5
million);
• U.S. 1 improvement in Bucks County (estimated $85 million);
• U.S. 422 reconstruction in Montgomery County (estimated $38 million);
• I-95 resurfacing in Bucks County (apparent low bid $29.6 million);
• Markley Street/U.S. 202 South improvement in Montgomery County (estimated
$24
million);
• I-76 resurfacing in Montgomery County (apparent low bid $21.1 million);
• MacDade Boulevard improvement in Delaware County (estimated $5.5
million); and
• 14 contracts to resurface 235 segment miles in the Philadelphia region.
A map showing all contracted work that District 6 has underway or that will
start or be bid this year is available at www.penndot.gov/district6 on the
"Construction Projects/Roadwork" page.
Serving as another example of transportation's impact on communities, the
three-phase Lafayette Street project is funded 80 percent by the Federal
Highway Administration (FHWA) and 20 percent by Montgomery County.
Montgomery
County initiated the project and manages it in partnership with PennDOT and
the
FHWA. The first phase, which extended Lafayette Street past its former
limit at
Ford Street into Plymouth Township, finished construction in early 2015.
The
second phase, completed in December 2016, improved local roads in
preparation
for the eventual interchange and includes widening Ridge Pike between Ross
Street and School Lane; realigning, rebuilding, and signalizing Fairfield
Road
and Diamond Avenue; and connecting the extended Lafayette Street into
Diamond
Avenue.
The third phase, estimated at $25 million, is on schedule to be bid this
fall
with construction expected to begin in the spring of 2018 and will widen
and
rebuild the existing Lafayette Street in downtown Norristown. The work will
also improve mobility for bicyclists and pedestrians by installing a
pedestrian
crossing at the Norristown Transportation Center and connecting the
Schuylkill
River Trail and the Chester Valley Trail at DeKalb Street and Lafayette
Street.
The regional investments complement the department's Road Maintenance and
Preservation, or Road MaP, program, which Governor Wolf recently announced
will
invest $2.1 billion in maintenance and highway and bridge capital projects
over
the next 10 years. Of the investments, $1 billion will go to roadway
maintenance and $1.1 billion will go to highway and bridge capital
projects. Of
the capital projects, $500 million will be allocated to an Interstate
preservation and reconstruction program, bringing that total program, begun
in
2016, to $1 billion over the next 10 years. Another $600 million will go
toward
rehabilitation and reconstruction needs identified through the department's
district and regional planning efforts.

• I-95 Betsy Ross Ramps/Adams Avenue Connector in Philadelphia ($81
million);
• U.S. 322 widening in Delaware County ($62.6 million);
• U.S. 202 bridges over Amtrak in Chester County ($26.4 million);
• Route 452 bridge replacement in Delaware County ($19.9 million);
• I-95 overhead bridges in Delaware County ($16.6 million);
• JFK Boulevard bridge rehabilitations in Philadelphia ($15.9 million);
• Pottstown signal system improvements in Montgomery County ($13.3
million);
• U.S 13 (Bristol Pike) resurfacing in Bucks County ($3 million); and
• Route 41/Newark Road Intersection improvement in Chester County ($1.4
million).
Notable projects that are expected to be bid this year include:
• I-95 GR4 in Philadelphia (estimated $278 million);
• Chestnut Street bridges in Philadelphia (apparent low bid $103.5
million);
• U.S. 1 improvement in Bucks County (estimated $85 million);
• U.S. 422 reconstruction in Montgomery County (estimated $38 million);
• I-95 resurfacing in Bucks County (apparent low bid $29.6 million);
• Markley Street/U.S. 202 South improvement in Montgomery County (estimated
$24
million);
• I-76 resurfacing in Montgomery County (apparent low bid $21.1 million);
The work will
also improve mobility for bicyclists and pedestrians by installing a

crossing at the Norristown Transportation Center and connecting the

5/24/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
Nighttime lane closures are scheduled on northbound and southbound
Interstate
95 between the I-476 (Exit 7) and Route 352/Route 320 (Exit 6) interchanges
in
the City of Chester, Delaware County, on Tuesday, May 30, through Friday,
June
2, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM, for work related to a $16.6 million project to
rehabilitate eight bridges over Interstate 95 and CSX Railroad in the city,
the
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
Currently, the Crosby Street pedestrian bridge over I-95 is under
construction.
Due to nature of the bridge repairs, Crosby Street has been closed to
pedestrians between 12th Street and 13th Street through July 2017. During
the
closure, pedestrians will be directed to use the Edgmont Avenue bridge to
cross
over I-95.
In addition to rehabilitating the Crosby Street bridge, PennDOT will
rehabilitate and improve the multi-span, steel girder bridges on Potter
Street,
Madison Street, Upland Street, Melrose Avenue, Chestnut Street, Edgmont
Avenue,
and the Walnut Street pedestrian structure. The contractor will also
improve
the I-95 south exit ramp at Chestnut Street.
During construction, PennDOT's contractor will repair the concrete bridge
decks
on seven structures and replace the concrete deck on the Potter Street
bridge.
Crews will also place a new concrete overlay on the bridges; repair piers
and
support abutments; replace fencing on the bridge parapets; repair curbs and
sidewalks; install new expansion joints; paint structural steel; reset
bridge
bearings; clean bridge drainage systems; repair existing lights; and
perform
other miscellaneous repairs.
PennDOT owns the Edgmont Avenue and Madison Avenue bridges, and the City of
Chester owns the remaining six structures.
Each bridge will close during construction as will the I-95 south exit ramp
at
Chestnut Street when construction begins on that section. The department
will
not permit the contractor to close certain bridges simultaneously, and it
will
post detours to move motorists and pedestrians around the closed spans.
Depending on the bridge under construction, lane restrictions will occur on
I-95 weeknights from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, and on
Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning.
In addition to the bridge and ramp improvements, PennDOT's contractor will
repair Chestnut Street and Morton Avenue from 12th Street to 4th Street.
Crews
will reconstruct curbs and sidewalks; mill and resurface the streets;
install a
new traffic signal at Chestnut Street and Morton Avenue; and upgrade the
traffic signal at Morton Avenue and 7th Street. The contractor will
reconstruct
Morton Avenue from 7th Street to 4th Street to lower the road under the
Amtrak
overpass to increase vertical clearance from 12 feet 9 inches to 13 feet 9
inches.
South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J. is the general contractor on the
$16,668,238 project which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

Online Tool Available for Memorial Day Travel Planning
5/24/2017-HARRISBURG
With many Pennsylvanians expected to travel for the upcoming Memorial Day
holiday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is
encouraging
the public to visit the "Historic Holiday Traffic" page at www.511PA.com so
they can plan optimal travel times on major roadways across the state this
weekend.
The site allows users to see how traffic speeds on the Friday before and
day of
Memorial Day in 2015 and 2016 compare to traffic conditions during a
typical,
non-holiday week. Users can choose their region and view an hour-by-hour,
color-coded visual of traffic speeds to help them decide the best times to
travel during the holiday. 511PA also offers real-time, traffic speed
information for thousands of roadway miles throughout Pennsylvania.
"These historic travel maps are one way that we put our data to work for
motorists," PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said. "Using our 511PA
service
before traveling is a great way to see planned as well as unexpected
traffic
issues."
PennDOT will also remove lane restrictions and suspend construction
projects
wherever possible through the holiday period. Motorists can see remaining
construction projects at www.511PA.com before they travel.
The public can use 511PA to check conditions on nearly 40,000 roadway miles
in
Pennsylvania. The service is free and available 24 hours a day, and

Route 926 (Street Road) Lane Closures Scheduled Next Week for Tree Removal in Birmingham Township, Chester County
Route 926 (Street Road) Lane Closures Scheduled Next Week for Tree Removal
in Birmingham Township, Chester County
5/24/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
Single lane closures are scheduled at the intersection of Route 926 (Street
Road) and Creek Road in Birmingham Township, Chester County, on Tuesday,
May
30, through Friday, June 2, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for tree removal
operations related to an $8.6 million project to replace the
structurally-deficient Route 926 (Street Road) bridge over the Brandywine
Creek
in Birmingham and Pocopson townships, the Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. The new bridge is scheduled to
reopen
by September 1, 2017.
Motorists are advised to allow additional time when traveling through the
work
zone. The contractor's schedule is dependent on the weather.
PennDOT is improving Route 926 (Street Road) by replacing the 79-year-old
bridge with a new three-span structure built at a higher elevation;
rebuilding
and raising 1,700 feet of the roadway approaches to make them less prone to
flooding; replacing the nearby culvert over Radley Run with an 84-foot twin
arch concrete culvert; and realigning 800 feet of Creek Road at its
northern
intersection with Route 926 (Street Road).
The new, aesthetically-designed bridge will be built to resemble the
current
structure and have stone form liners covering the piers so they resemble
the
existing piers. The new structure also will include an open, higher
railing.
Separate detours are in use during construction for the closures of Route
926
(Street Road) and Creek Road. Motorists using Route 926 (Street Road) will
be
detoured over U.S. 202, U.S. 1, and Route 52 (Lenape Road). Creek Road will
close in June 2017 and motorists will be detoured over U.S. 1 and Route 52
(Lenape Road).
Following the reopening of Route 926 (Street Road), there will be one
weekend
in spring 2018 when Route 926 (Street Road) will close for the final
resurfacing of the new bridge and culvert.
The existing four-span bridge was built in 1937 and rehabilitated in 1974.
The
steel I-beam structure is 190 feet long and 26 feet wide. The bridge, which
is
posted with a weight restriction of 26 tons and 33 tons for combination
loads,
carries approximately 13,200 vehicles a day.
To improve travel through the intersection of Route 52 (Lenape Road) and
Pocopson Road/West Creek Road, PennDOT's contractor activated a new traffic
signal that includes a Flashing Yellow Arrow signal for left turns from
Route
52 (Lenape Road) to Pocopson Road/West Chester Road, in addition to the
standard red, yellow and green lights. This Flashing Yellow Arrow signal is
the
first to operate in the Philadelphia region.
More information on the Flashing Yellow Arrow signals and other traffic
signal
initiatives is available at www.penndot.gov in the Traffic Signals,
Management
section of "Travel in PA".
Clearwater Construction Inc., of Mercer, Pa., is the general contractor on
the
$8,614,000 project financed with 100 percent state funds.

Wolf Administration Announces Work to Begin on Bridge Rehabilitations in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery Counties
Wolf Administration Announces Work to Begin on Bridge Rehabilitations in
Bucks, Chester and Montgomery Counties
5/24/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Wolf Administration announced today that construction is scheduled to
begin
next month on a $5.5 million project to rehabilitate 10 structurally
deficient
bridges in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties.
"Rehabilitating these bridges will help maintain mobility and connectivity
throughout southeastern Pennsylvania," Governor Tom Wolf said. "The project
is
focused on maintenance and repairs of these existing bridges to extend
their
service life, and most importantly, ensure the safety of those traveling
within
the Commonwealth."
Beginning Monday, June 12, the Spring Garden Street Bridge over Interstate
76
will be closed between Chestnut Street and Spruce Lane in West Conshohocken
Borough, Montgomery County.
During construction, Spring Garden Street motorists will be detoured over
Crawford Avenue, Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) and Spring Garden
Street.
Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.
As part of the rehabilitation, crews will repair the existing concrete
bridge
deck using hydro demolition and apply a latex modified concrete overlay,
reseal
deck joints at the abutments, install new guiderail as well as complete
other
scheduled repairs. Construction on the bridge is expected to be completed
in
July.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area
because slowdowns will occur. The work schedule is weather dependent.
The one-span, steel-frame bridge was built in 1951. It is 87 feet long and
29
feet wide. The structure carries about 490 vehicles a day.
The other bridges included in this rehabilitation project include the
following:
• Thatcher Road over Tohickon Creek in Richland Township, Bucks County;
• Thatcher Road over Dimple Creek in Haycock Township, Bucks County;
• U.S. 1 over Church Road in New Garden Township, Chester County;
• University Road over U.S. 1 in Upper Oxford Township, Chester County;
• Township Road over U.S. 1 in Lower Oxford Township, Chester County;
• Cowpath Road over Perkiomen Creek in Salford and Franconia townships,
Montgomery County;
• Terwood Road over Pennypack Creek in Upper Moreland Township,
Montgomery County;
• Gypsy Lane over I-76 in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County; and
• Farmington Avenue over Route 100 in Upper Pottsgrove, Montgomery County.
Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor
on
this $5,505,505 bridge improvement project that is financed with 100
percent
state funds through Act 89, Pennsylvania's transportation plan.
Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in October 2019.
