University Avenue Weekday Lane Closure Scheduled for Intersection Improvement Project in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – A weekday lane closure is scheduled on University Avenue between Grays Ferry Avenue and Civic Center Boulevard in Philadelphia, on Monday, January 3, through Friday, January 14, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM under a project to improve travel and safety at the University Avenue/34th Street intersection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and slowdowns may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will realign the intersection, which is listed on the National Highway System and is classified as an "Urban Principal Arterial", through relocating the lane on which exiting I-76 eastbound motorists currently merge onto westbound University Avenue and moving it closer to the ramp's existing signalized intersection with University Avenue/34^th Street. This safety improvement will allow the traffic signal to control the right turn onto westbound University Avenue instead of a yield sign. Dual right turn lanes will also be added for this new turning move.

In addition, the contractor will resurface and upgrade traffic signals at the intersection; rebuild ADA curb ramps to improve pedestrian safety; and install new guiderail, drainage, and stormwater management features at this location.

Tony DePaul & Son of Flourtown is the general contractor on this $1.9 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in fall 2023.

I-95 Single, Double Lane Closures Scheduled Next Week for Construction in Delaware County

King of Prussia, PA – Interstate 95 motorists will encounter single and double lane closures in both directions next week at several locations between the Delaware state line and Route 352/320 (Edgmont Avenue) interchanges for asphalt grinding and guiderail installation under a project to rehabilitate pavement and repair 15 structures on more than 11 miles of the interstate in Lower Chichester, Upper Chichester, Chester, Ridley and Tinicum townships, the City of Chester and Upland and Ridley Park boroughs, Delaware County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The work schedule is:

• Monday, January 3, through Thursday, January 6, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and from 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM, a single lane closure will be in place in sections on northbound and southbound I-95; and
• Monday, January 3, through Thursday, January 6, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a double lane closure will be in place in sections on northbound and southbound I-95.
  

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will mill, overlay and rehabilitate the existing concrete pavement including 41 ramps; perform minor structural repairs to 15 of the 33 bridges located in the project limits; repair sections of median barrier; upgrade guide rail; install new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips; repair and clean existing inlets and pipes; and replace damaged or missing traffic signs. The Pennsylvania Welcome Center just north of the Delaware state line also will be improved with concrete base repairs and new parking stripes, pavement markings and signs.

Allan A. Myers, Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $68.4 million project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to be completed in late 2023.

Street Road Bridge Over Leech Run Closed Indefinitely in Lower Oxford Township

King of Prussia, PA – The bridge carrying Street Road over Leech Run in Lower Oxford Township, Chester County was closed today due to scour damage and serious deterioration at the abutments discovered during an inspection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The bridge will remain closed until PennDOT bridge engineers can examine the extent of the damage and develop a plan to repair and reopen the bridge.

During the bridge closure, a section of Street Road will be closed between Route 472 (Lancaster Pike) and Scroggy Road. Motorists will be directed to use Route 472 (Lancaster Pike), U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass) and Route 10 (Limestone Road) to access Street Road. Local access will be maintained up to the bridge closure.

The Street Road bridge over Leach was built in 1924. The single-span, reinforced concrete T-beam bridge is 39 feet long, 18 feet wide and carries approximately 325 vehicles a day. The bridge was listed in poor condition prior to today's closing.

I-95 Nighttime Travel Restrictions Next Two Weeks for Construction at Bridge Street Interchange in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Travel restrictions will be in place at night the next two weeks on Interstate 95 between the Bridge Street and Cottman Avenue interchanges in Philadelphia as construction crews complete work on the northbound side of I-95 and begin setting up a new work zone for southbound I-95 reconstruction at the northern end of the Bridge Street Interchange, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The work schedule and locations are:

• Monday, January 3, from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, northbound and southbound I-95 will be reduced to one lane for barrier placement and line painting;
• Tuesday, January 4, through Friday, January 7, from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, northbound and southbound I-95 will be reduced to one lane for barrier placement and line painting; and
• Monday, January 10, and Tuesday, January 11, from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, northbound and southbound I-95 will be reduced to one lane for construction of crossovers to and from the new work zone.
  

During the lane closures next week, northbound traffic will be moved onto the rebuilt northbound lanes as temporary construction barrier is set on the northbound side. The barrier will separate three lanes of northbound traffic from three lanes of southbound traffic on the widened and reconstructed northbound side when three lanes of southbound traffic are shifted to the opposite side following completion of the crossovers early Tuesday, January 11.

Once all traffic is moved to the northbound side to establish a new work zone, reconstruction and widening of the southbound lanes, stage two of the overall project, will begin. Stage two also includes construction of the southbound side of new I-95 bridges over VanKirk and Comly streets.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel through the work area as backups and delays are expected. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The traffic shift marks the substantial completion of the first major stage of PennDOT's $79.7 million I-95 Section BS1 project to reconstruct and improve I-95 from Levick Street to Carver Street, including construction of a long retaining wall along Tacony Street to support northbound widening, the replacement of the bridges carrying northbound I-95 over Van Kirk Street and Comly Street, and installation of an extensive stormwater drainage system. The Section BS1 contract also includes improvements to the parking area, lighting, and landscaping at Lardner's Point Park on the Delaware River near Levick Street.  

Stage two will continue through late 2022. Work on the Section BS1 project began in early spring 2020.

On-off ramps at the I-95/Bridge Street Interchange will remain open during BS1 construction. 

Section BS1 is the first of two contracts to reconstruct mainline I-95 at the Bridge Street Interchange. A second mainline reconstruction project at the interchange, Section BS2, is currently in design and will move to construction following completion of Section BS1 in late 2022.

In addition to rebuilding the northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 from Carver Street to Margaret Street, Section BS2 will construct a new replacement interchange located on Tacony Street at the Dietz & Watson/Frankford Boat Launch driveway, where a southbound off-ramp and a northbound on-ramp will be constructed. This is also the location of the proposed Delaware Avenue extension that will be built later under Section BS5.

The closure will be in place Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM through Tuesday, February 15.

During the closure, motorists will be directed to use Bridge Street and Route 23 (Ridge Road). Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

Markley Street (U.S. 202 South), Main Street Travel Restrictions Next Week for Construction in Norristown

King of Prussia, PA – Southbound Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) will be reduced to one lane between Marshall Street and Main Street on Monday, January 3, through Friday, January 7, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for installation of temporary traffic signal poles near the intersection with Main Street in Norristown, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

In addition, periodic lane closures will be in place on Main Street at the intersection during the pole installation.

Northbound U.S. 202 motorists headed to Norristown are advised to follow the project detour that uses DeKalb Pike starting in Bridgeport to avoid congestion at the Markley Street/Main Street intersection on the north side of the Dannehower Bridge.

Motorists should allow extra time for travel through or near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All operations are weather dependent. 

Reconstruction activities are now underway on the southbound side of Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) along with improvements at Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) intersections with Main Street and Marshall Street.

Allan Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Construction on the entire project is expected to be completed in late 2022.

PennDOT, Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania DUI Association Highlight 'Operation Safe Holiday' Campaign Across Southeast Pennsylvania

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police, and the Pennsylvania DUI Association held an event today at the Bucks County Public Safety Training Center to outline regional impaired driving safety efforts during "Operation Safe Holiday," a statewide campaign to promote safe transportation practices throughout the holiday season.

"Death and injuries caused by impaired drivers are 100 percent preventable. The importance of not getting behind the wheel when impaired cannot be stressed enough. We want people to go out and have a good time, but we also want people to be responsible," said Leo Hegarty, Regional DUI Program Administrator of the Pennsylvania DUI Association. "Please make the conscious decision not to drive while impaired."

According to PennDOT data, in the Philadelphia region, during the 2020 holiday travel period beginning the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and running through January 2, 2021, there were 226 impaired driving crashes, resulting in seven fatalities. The tragedy of these deaths is felt year-round, but most strongly during the holidays for many.

PennDOT encourages people to plan before heading out for holiday festivities by doing the following:

• Plan a safe and sober ride home ahead of time.
• If you're hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a sober ride home.
• If you are impaired by alcohol or drugs, do not drive.
• If you know someone who is impaired, take their keys and don't let them get behind the wheel.
• Call 911 if you see an impaired driver.
• Always wear your seat belt – it's your best defense against impaired drivers.
• Remember traffic could be increased because of the holidays. Stay calm, slow down and watch for pedestrians always. 

The Pennsylvania State Police and hundreds of municipal police departments statewide will participate in the "Operation Safe Holiday" campaign this year to increase traffic safety enforcement through the New Year's holiday. "This holiday season, more people will be out, and it's important to remember it's up to each one of us to keep the roads safe," said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Jessica Tobin. "Police will do their part to keep Pennsylvania safe by holding people accountable, and we want everyone who may be driving for the holiday to do their part by obeying all traffic laws, so everyone gets to their destination unharmed."

Drivers are also reminded to obey Pennsylvania's Move Over Law, which requires drivers to move over or slow down when they encounter an emergency scene, traffic stop, or disabled vehicle. The goal of the Move Over Law is to protect law enforcement, emergency medical providers, and other first responders when responding to crashes.

King of Prussia, PA – Interstate 95 is among state highways restricted beginning Sunday, January 2, in Philadelphia and Bucks counties for guiderail repair, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. The intermittent lane closures will remain in place Sundays through Fridays, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, through late March 2022.

The work locations are:

• Both directions on I-95 between the Delaware County line and Bucks County line in Philadelphia;
• Both directions on I-95 between the Philadelphia County line and the Interstate 276 Interchange in Bensalem and Bristol townships, Bucks County;

King of Prussia PA – Westbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) motorists will experience a brief right lane closure between the 30^th Street and the Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway) interchanges in Philadelphia on Wednesday, December 29, from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM, for bridge inspection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because slowdowns may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The inspections are part of PennDOT's program to inspect bridges at least once every two years. The inspections ensure the safety and overall condition of the structures.

University Avenue Lane Closures Next Week for Intersection Improvement Project in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Alternating lane closures are scheduled in both directions on University Avenue between Grays Ferry Avenue and Civic Center Boulevard in Philadelphia, on Monday, December 27, through Thursday, December 30, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, due to a project to improve travel and safety at the University Avenue/34th Street intersection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and slowdowns may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will realign the intersection, which is listed on the National Highway System and is classified as an "Urban Principal Arterial", through relocating the lane on which exiting I-76 eastbound motorists currently merge onto westbound University Avenue and moving it closer to the ramp's existing signalized intersection with University Avenue/34^th Street. This safety improvement will allow the traffic signal to control the right turn onto westbound University Avenue instead of a yield sign. Dual right turn lanes will also be added for this new turning move.

In addition, the contractor will resurface and upgrade traffic signals at the intersection; rebuild ADA curb ramps to improve pedestrian safety; and install new guiderail, drainage, and stormwater management features at this location.

Tony DePaul & Son of Flourtown is the general contractor on this $1,930,228 project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in fall 2023.

PennDOT Reopens U.S. 1 North Ramp to I-295 West in Middletown Township, Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA – The ramp from U.S. 1 North to westbound Interstate 295 in Middletown Township, Bucks County, has reopened, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today, following the completion of a bridge rehabilitation project.

This work is one of seven structures in Bucks, Chester, and Montgomery counties that PennDOT is repairing/replacing under a $6.5 million project financed with 100 percent state funds.

Structures completed under this project include:

• Saginaw Road over Big Elk Creek in East Nottingham and New London townships, Chester County; and
• Richlandtown Pike over Cooks Creek in Springfield Township, Bucks County.

Other structures scheduled for replacement/rehabilitation include the following:

• Barnsley Road over branch of Northeast Creek in East Nottingham Township, Chester County;
• Lower State Road over branch of Mill Creek in Doylestown Borough, Bucks County;
• 5th Street over Little Elk Creek in East Nottingham Township, Chester County; and
• Washington Lane over branch of Pennypack Creek in Lower Moreland Township, Montgomery County.

Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor on the bridge/culvert improvement project. Work on the entire project is expected to be completed winter 2024.

Swamp Creek Road Bridge over Unami Creek Closed in Marlborough Township

King of Prussia, PA – The bridge carrying Swamp Creek Road over Unami Creek in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County, was closed today after undermining of the bridge pier was discovered during an underwater bridge inspection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Work to repair the three-span stone masonry arch bridge is expected to begin in early January 2022. The roadway will remain closed for a few weeks until underpinning work is performed to prevent future scouring.

During the closure, Swamp Creek Road motorists will be directed to use Geryville Pike, Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike), Route 563 (Ridge Road), and Whites Mill Road.

Built in 1892, Swamp Creek Road Bridge was recently closed due to damaged caused by Tropical Storm Ida. Approximately 203 vehicles travel across the 89-foot-long, 20-foot-wide structure daily.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent.

PennDOT to Begin Second Section of the Route 309 Connector Project in Montgomery County

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Monday, January 3 on an improvement project to construct a new roadway alignment to connect Wambold Road from Allentown Road to the Hatfield/Souderton Pike intersection in Franconia and Hatfield townships, Montgomery County.

This project, Section HT2, covers 2.3 miles and is the second of three contracts to move to construction to build the five-mile-long Route 309 Connector in Montgomery and Bucks counties to enhance mobility and safety for motorists traveling between Route 309 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange.

The first section, Section HAT, was completed in 2012 and included rebuilding and realigning approximately 1.5 miles of Wambold Road from Route 63 to Allentown Road in Franconia Township.

The final section of the Route 309 Connector project, Section HT3, from Hatfield/Souderton Pike to County Line Road, Route 309 and Fairhill Road in Hatfield and Franconia townships, Montgomery County, and Hilltown Township, Bucks County, is currently in preliminary engineering.

Under Section HT2, PennDOT's contractor will:  

• Construct a new roadway from Allentown Road to the Hatfield/Souderton Pike intersection;
• Reconstruct Township Line Road from Cowpath Road to Hatfield Souderton Pike;
• Replace two culverts;
• Construct two retaining walls;
• Build six noise walls on both sides of Wambold Road between Elroy Road and Cowpath Road;
• Install four new traffic signals and removing and replacing two others;
• Upgrade the traffic signals along existing Wambold Road to a new adaptive system;  
• Upgrade pedestrian facilities;
• Construct stormwater management facilities throughout the project
• Perform various drainage, roadway and signing improvements;
• Construct 1.5 miles of multi-use trail between Allentown Road and Cowpath Road;
• Perform improvements to the Route 63 (Old Forty Road) and Pennsylvania Turnpike EZ Pass ramp intersection in Towamencin Township; and
• Perform off-site traffic signal improvements in Lower Salford and Towamencin townships.  
  

Beginning Monday, January 3, several construction activities will get underway through the winter into early spring 2022, including clearing, erosion and sedimentary control and construction of a temporary access road. Traffic will not be impacted by any of these operations.

During construction on Section HT2, several closures and detours will be implemented as needed by the contractor. Most construction activities will take place during off-peak hours.

Allan Myers, LP of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $42,335,555 project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Construction on the entire project is expected to finish in fall 2025.

King of Prussia, PA – Chemical Road reopened this morning between Metroplex Boulevard and Germantown Pike in Plymouth Township, Montgomery County following the completion of major construction on a sinkhole remediation project, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. The ramp from northbound Interstate 476 to Plymouth Meeting/Chemical Road (Exit 19) will reopen early this afternoon once signs and barriers are removed. 

PennDOT's contractor has worked since the spring to stabilize and fill underlying voids beneath a section of Chemical Road.

While major construction on the project has been completed, there will be periodic single lane closures on Chemical Road sometime in spring 2022 for seeding and tree planting operations.

PennDOT Completes Major Construction on Route 252 (Palmers Mill Road) Bridge Replacement over Crum Creek in Delaware County

King of Prussia, PA - Work has been substantially completed on a $13.3 million project to replace the structure that carries Route 252 (Palmers Mill Road) over Crum Creek/Springton Sam at Springton Reservoir in Marple and Upper Providence townships, Delaware County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Work began in January 2019 to address existing deficiencies on the Route 252 (Palmers Mill Road) bridge and provide increased span length to accommodate Aqua Pennsylvania's future spillway improvement project.

Under this project, PennDOT's contractor improved Route 252 (Palmer's Mill Road) so that the structure is capable of efficiently and safely handing existing and expected traffic, and to eliminate the deteriorated condition of the existing bridge. The bridge was built in 1931 and was listed in poor condition prior to the replacement. The project also was driven by the need to facilitate modifications to the dam below the bridge.

This bridge improvement project also included the construction of a retaining wall, drainage improvements and guiderail installation.

While major construction on the project has been completed, there will be periodic lane closures in January and possibly February to install guiderail on the Route 252 (Palmers Mill Road) bridge approaches.

J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, Chester County is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will utilize periodic 15-minute traffic stoppages on eastbound and westbound U.S. 422 and on North Gulph Road in the vicinity of the Turnpike overpasses in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County and Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County on Wednesday, December 22, between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, for installation of aerial utilities related to construction currently underway to widen and improve the Turnpike between milepost 324 and milepost 326, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The three stoppages, which will not take place concurrently, will be preceded by slow-moving traffic paces on U.S. 422 between the Oaks and Valley Forge Road interchanges, and on North Gulph Road between First Avenue and Guthrie Road.

Motorists should use caution and be prepared for slow or stopped traffic approaching these areas. Digital message signs will provide information on closures and detours. Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.

Route 100 Lane Closure for Bridge Inspection in Pottstown, North Coventry Township

King of Prussia PA – Route 100 motorists will experience a right lane closure in both directions between the northbound Route 663 (King Street) and the U.S. 422 interchanges in Pottstown, Montgomery County, and North Coventry Township, Chester County, on Monday, December 20, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for bridge inspection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because slowdowns may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The inspections are part of PennDOT's program to inspect bridges at least once every two years. The inspections ensure the safety and overall condition of the structures.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

Cobbs Creek Parkway Among State Highways Restricted Next Week for Safety Improvements in Philadelphia, Chester, and Montgomery Counties

King of Prussia, PA – Cobbs Creek Parkway is among state highways restricted in Philadelphia, Chester and Montgomery counties on Monday, December 20, through Thursday, December 23, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for line painting and delineator installations under a project to install safety enhancements to improve travel and reduce high-speed crashes across the five-county Philadelphia region, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The work locations are:

• Cobbs Creek Parkway between Christian Street and 58th Street in Philadelphia for line painting and delineator installation;
• Route 3 (Paoli Pike) at the Garfield Avenue/Westtown Road Intersection in West Goshen Township, Chester County for delineator installation; and
• Route 100 at the Rick Road Intersection in Douglass Township, Montgomery County, for delineator installation.

 Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Kuharchik Construction, INC. of Exeter, is the general contractor on this $5,996,57 project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in spring 2023.

PennDOT Reopens 232-Year-Old Trinity Lane Bridge (Route 320) in Upper Merion Township

King of Prussia, PA – The bridge carrying Trinity Lane (Route 320) over Gulph Mills Creek in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County has reopened following the rehabilitation of the 232-year-old structure, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

PennDOT's contractor utilized original salvaged stone to perform various masonry repairs, installed new guiderail, and resurfaced the roadway and approaches. The original plaque on the structure was also preserved.

Built in 1789 and reconstructed in 1980, the Trinity Lane Bridge is the fifth oldest bridge in use in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The structure is 22-feet-long, 34-feet-wide and carries just over 7,000 vehicles per day.

The bridge is one of five structures in Chester, Montgomery, and Delaware counties that PennDOT repaired under a $4,948,703 project.

Other structures completed under this project include:

• Kaolin Road Bridge over the west branch of Red Clay Creek in Kennett Township, Chester County;
• Concord Road over Green Creek in Concord Township, Delaware County;
• Mansion Road over the south branch of French Creek in Warwick Township, Chester County. Built in 1904, Mansion Road Bridge (Brower's Bridge) is listed with the National Register of Historic Places and a part of the Reading Furnace Historic District; and
• Route 63 (Red Lion Road) over Huntingdon Valley Creek in Lower Moreland Township, Montgomery County.
  

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County is the general contractor on this bridge improvement project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

U.S. 1 Periodic Nighttime Traffic Stoppages Next Week for Overhead Electric Line Removal in Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA - Periodic northbound and southbound 15-minute traffic stoppages may be in place on U.S. 1 in Bucks County on Monday, December 20, from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM for removal of overhead electric lines between the Street Road (Route 132) Interchange in Bensalem Township and the Route 413 Interchange in Middletown Township, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The electric lines are being removed as part of the construction to widen U.S.1 and replace bridges over the Neshaminy Creek and over rail lines near the Penndel exit.

Motorists should allow extra time for travel through the work areas. All scheduled activities are weather dependent. If weather forces cancelation of Monday night's operation, the electric line removal will take place on Tuesday, December 21, from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM. 

Crews are reconstructing and widening almost three miles of roadway, improving the interchanges, and constructing several new bridges — including new structures over the Neshaminy Creek and over rail lines near the Penndel exit — under two contracts (RC1, RC2) to rebuild, widen and improve U.S.1 in Bucks County.

JD Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, is the general contractor on the $110.8 million Section RC2 project that is scheduled be completed in mid-2026. Alan Myers Construction, of Worcester, PA, is the general contractor on the $95 million Section RC1 project that is expected to be completed in mid-2022.

Sections RC1 and RC2 are two of the three construction contracts to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough.

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has reopened Sheeder Road over branch of French Creek in East Vincent Township, Chester County, following the completion of a bridge rehabilitation due to severe undermining of the stone masonry support abutments resulting from storm damage.

Built in 1937, the single-span bridge is 15 feet long, 24 feet wide and carries approximately 1,221 vehicles per day.

PennDOT to Begin Second Phase to Improve Travel and Safety on Henry Avenue in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Monday, December 27, on the second phase to improve travel and safety on Henry Avenue in Philadelphia just south of Roberts Avenue to Barnes Street within the East Falls and Wissahickon communities.

Under this contract, PennDOT's contractor will perform construction to upgrade traffic signals, redesign the highway infrastructure, improve mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists, and address speeding along this 1.6-mile section of Henry Avenue.

New and upgraded traffic signals will be installed at the following intersections: Abbotsford Avenue; the Medical College driveway; Queen Lane; Midvale Avenue; Coulter Street; Schoolhouse Lane; and the Jefferson University driveway.

Additional enhancements include new signing and roadway design features through pavement markings; milling and resurfacing; median widening; and guiderail replacements.

To improve traffic safety, a southbound left turn lane will be added at the Midvale Avenue intersection, and the traffic island at Warden Drive will be enlarged. In addition, vegetative raised center medians will be added south of Abbotsford Avenue, south of the Medical College driveway, and north of Schoolhouse Lane, as well as concrete raised center medians at the Medical College driveway, Queen Lane, and Coulter Street.

To enhance pedestrian and bicyclist mobility, the contract includes the construction of a shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path along the east side of Henry Avenue from Schoolhouse Lane to Walnut Lane.

Other safety enhancements include installing bump-outs, sidewalks, and ADA ramps at the following intersections: Roberts Avenue; Abbotsford Avenue; Medical College driveway; Indian Queen Lane; Bowman Street; Ainslie Street; Tilden Street; Queen Lane; Penn Street; Midvale Avenue; Coulter Street; Warden Drive; Schoolhouse Lane; and the Jefferson University driveway.

The project will also feature additional speed calming measures such as median deflection; high friction surface treatment; orange placards attached to speed limit signs; 35 mph pavement markings; and hidden driveway signs.

This transportation project will also address storm water management through storm drainage; water facility relocation; and green stormwater infrastructure.

PennDOT will maintain traffic on Henry Avenue during construction by utilizing long- term lane shifts and short-term single-lane closures.

Beginning Monday, December 27, southbound Henry Avenue motorists will encounter periodic alternating lane closures between Roberts Avenue and Barnes Street for inlet, piping, curb, sidewalk, and bump-out installation. The periodic lane closures will be in place weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM through November 2022.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

A.P. Construction, Inc. of Blackwood, New Jersey is the general contractor on the $12.6 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in late 2023. More information on this project and on the first phase, which began in March 2021, is available at www.Penndot.gov/HenryAvePhilly.
