PennDOT - District 6 News: Northbound Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) Detour Begins Monday Through Fall 2022 in Norristown

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Northbound Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) Detour Begins Monday Through Fall 2022 in Norristown

King of Prussia, PA – Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) in Norristown, Montgomery County, will be closed to northbound traffic between Main Street and Elm Street for approximately three years beginning sometime after 7:00 AM Monday, January 27, for construction of improvements under $23.9 million reconstruction project, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Northbound U.S. 202 through motorists heading to Markley Street will be detoured north on DeKalb Street (U.S. 202 North) in Bridgeport Borough to Johnson Highway in Norristown. Northbound motorists using the Dannehower Bridge will be required to turn east or west on Main Street in Norristown.

The northbound closure and detour will be in place until fall 2022, the expected completion of the project. Markley Street will remain open to two lanes of southbound traffic through the work zone except for several planned weekend and overnight closures during later stages of the project to reconstruct the intersection of Main Street and Markley Street.

Northbound SEPTA Route 90 busses normally traversing Markley Street will be detoured.

Stage 1 construction is currently underway to rebuild the northbound side of Markley Street between Main Street and Elm Street, including replacement of the northbound bridge over the Stony Creek between Airy Street and Marshall Street.

This project is the second of two contracts to improve the Markley Street Corridor in Norristown. Markley Street was reconstructed and improved between Elm Street and Johnson Highway under a project that was completed in 2017.

Crews will rebuild Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) in two stages between Main Street and Elm Street beginning with the northbound side before switching construction activities to the southbound side, which will also include improvements to Marshall Street. Access will be maintained to all driveways and local roads during both construction stages.

During Main Street construction, crews will utilize three major stages to perform widening between Water Street and Barbadoes Street. Construction will start on the north side, followed by the south side, and finish with the middle section west of Markley Street (U.S. 202 South). In order to minimize traffic impacts, one through lane and one turn lane will be maintained on both Main Street approaches to Markley Street (U.S. 202 South) during peak travel times.

A pedestrian detour route will be provided on Astor Street between Marshall Street and Main Street until access is re-established on the new bridge over Stony Creek.

Allan Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $23,925,515 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Construction on the entire project is expected to be completed in late 2022. For more information on this U.S. 202 improvement project, visit us202-markleystreet.com.

PennDOT - District 6 News: New Traffic Pattern Tuesday for U.S. 1 North Traffic Heading to Street Road, PA Turnpike in Bensalem

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

New Traffic Pattern Tuesday for U.S. 1 North Traffic Heading to Street Road, PA Turnpike in Bensalem

King of Prussia, PA – A new, interim traffic pattern will be in place beginning at 6:00 AM Tuesday, January 28, on northbound U.S. 1 between Old Lincoln Highway and Rockhill Drive in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, that will require motorists heading for Street Road (Route 132) and the ramp to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Plaza to use the right lane, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Under the traffic pattern that has been in place for several months during reconstruction of the Street Road ramps, northbound U.S. 1 motorists have been required to remain in the left lane for access to the Turnpike ramp.

Tuesday morning's traffic pattern change on northbound U.S. 1 will be coordinated with the reopening of the northbound U.S. 1 ramp from Street Road (Route 132). The ramp has been closed since January 20 for construction to tie the ramp into reconstructed northbound U.S. 1.

The new, interim traffic pattern that will be implemented on northbound U.S. 1 will allow crews to complete the remaining Stage 1 construction along the northbound side of U.S. 1.

Stage 1 northbound U.S 1 construction is expected to be completed in early February. A new traffic pattern will then be established to move two lanes of northbound traffic onto the new northbound lanes, including the northbound segments of new bridges over Street Road (Route 132), the Turnpike, and the Turnpike ramps. The new pattern is tentatively scheduled to be put in place the weekend of February 7-9.

In addition, single lane closures will be in place periodically on U.S. 1, Street Road (Route 132), and Bristol Road on Sunday, January 26, through Friday, January 31, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning for bridge and roadway construction.

The work locations are:

  • Northbound or southbound U.S. 1 between Rockhill Drive and Old Lincoln Highway;
  • Eastbound or westbound Street Road (Route 132) between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way; and
  • Bristol Road between Belmont Avenue and Old Lincoln Highway. Traffic will be controlled by flagging.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are weather permitting.

Motorists also are advised that vehicle navigation systems and traffic apps like WAZE, Google Traffic, and others, may not be updated in time for the traffic shift and that northbound drivers should follow the posted work zone signs for accessing the Turnpike.

The work is part of a corridor improvement project, and the first of three construction contracts, to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough. U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) Lane Closures at Night for Viaduct Construction in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Left lane closures are scheduled on northbound and southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between Fox Street and 17th Street in Philadelphia on Monday, January 20, through Friday, January 24, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for construction activities under a project to rehabilitate the half-mile-long Wayne Junction Viaduct which carries the expressway over SEPTA tracks, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) through the work areas because slowdowns and backups will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J. is the general contractor on the $90.7 million project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to be completed in late 2022. For more information, visit us1wav.com.
