An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 1 Traffic Stoppages Monday Night, Full Closure Next Weekend for Bristol Road Overpass Demolition in Bensalem Township

King of Prussia, PA – U.S. 1 will be closed between the Neshaminy and Business U.S. 1/Penndel interchanges on Saturday, November 7, from 10:00 PM to 10:00 AM the following morning, for demolition of the Bristol Road overpass in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

In advance of work on the overpass, northbound and southbound U.S. 1 traffic will encounter periodic full stoppages of up to 15 minutes between the Neshaminy and U.S. 1/Business 1/Penndel interchanges on Monday, November 2, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, for rehanging overhead utility lines over U.S. 1 at the overpass.

Additionally, Bristol Road between Old Lincoln Highway and Neshaminy Boulevard will be closed to through traffic for approximately six months beginning at 6:00 AM Friday, November 6, for replacement of the overpass.

This one-night bridge removal operation will generate noise that will be heard in neighborhoods within close proximity of the bridge. This work is being expedited over a single evening to reduce long term nightwork operations and inconvenience to the neighborhoods.

The replacement of the Bristol Road overpass during the current construction stage will also accelerate the completion date for the entire RC1 Section by at least one year. The project is now scheduled to finish in late 2021.

Additional daytime and nighttime lane restrictions also will be in place on U.S. 1 and Street Road (Route 132) next week for bridge and roadway construction under the ongoing project to widen and improve U.S.1 in Bucks County.

The lane closure schedule and locations are:

  • Sunday, November 1, through Saturday, November 7, from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Sunday, November 1, through Friday, November 6, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, periodic single lane closures will be in place on northbound or southbound U.S. 1 between Rockhill Drive and Old Lincoln Highway; and
  • Sunday, November 1, through Saturday, November 7, from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Sunday, November 1, through Friday, November 6, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, periodic single lane closures will be in place on eastbound or westbound Street Road (Route 132) between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way.

Through traffic on U.S. 1 will be detoured on Interstate 95 and Woodhaven Road (Route 63) during the overnight closure. Local traffic will follow posted detours around the closure area.
Bristol Road traffic will be detoured on Neshaminy Boulevard, Rockhill Road and Old Lincoln Highway around the overpass closure.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

Reconstruction of the middle section along 1.3 miles of U.S. 1, the second major stage of the RC1 project, is nearing completion. Reconstruction will shift to the southbound side — including construction of the southbound sections of U.S. 1 bridges over Street Road (Route 132), the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the Turnpike ramps at the Bensalem Interchange — later this fall. Center area construction continues on Street Road (Route 132) at the U.S. 1 interchange.

Allan A. Myers, Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $95.1 million Section RC1 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

Section RC1 is the first of three construction contracts to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough.  For more information, visit www.us1bucks.com.

U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) Lane Closures Next Week for Soil Boring in Upper Chichester Township

King of Prussia, PA — Alternating eastbound or westbound lane closures will be in place on U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) between Interstate 95 and the Route 452/Market Street interchanges in Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County, on Monday, November 2, through Friday, November 6, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, for soil boring, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The soil boring is part of the design engineering activities underway for the upcoming U.S. 322 Section CSX project to replace the bridge over Bethel Avenue and CSX railroad and improve the adjacent interchange. Section CSX, which  is scheduled to be under construction in late 2021, is one of four separate contracts that make up PennDOT's U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) improvement project.

This operation will proceed in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel through the work area or to use an alternate route as backups may occur on U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) and on the ramps from I-95 to westbound U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway). All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

PennDOT began construction in early 2017 on the first-of-three mainline projects (Section 101) to widen and reconstruct U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) to just east of Route 452 (Market Street) in Concord, Bethel and Upper Chichester townships, Delaware County.

PennDOT's contractor is in the third-and-final stage of construction on the Section 101 project, where final paving is currently underway.  Section 101 improvements are scheduled to be completed in late 2020.

Design engineering continues on two additional projects (Section 102, 103) that will finish the widening and reconstruction of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway)  from east of Clayton Park Drive through the Route 452 (Market Street) in Bethel and Upper Chichester townships. PennDOT - District 6 News: I-76 West to Close at Night Next Week for Viaduct Repairs in Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 West to Close at Night Next Week for Viaduct Repairs in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Westbound Interstate 76 will be closed periodically at night and  eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane periodically at night next week for construction on two viaducts between 30th Street and University Avenue in Center City Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

In addition, westbound I-76 remains reduced to one lane around-the-clock between University Avenue and 30th Street and the eastbound and westbound on- and off ramps at South Street remain closed for construction of a new I-76 median barrier. Motorists normally using the South Street ramps will follow posted detour signs.

Weather permitting, the additional I-76 lane restriction and locations for next week are:

  • Sunday, November 1, through Saturday, November 7, periodically from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane between 30th Street and University Avenue for median barrier construction; and
  • Monday, November 2, through Friday, November 6, periodically from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, westbound I-76 will be closed between 30th Street and Interstate 676, or the ramp from westbound I-76 to 30th Street will be closed, for construction on the overhead viaduct.

When westbound I-76 is closed, traffic will be directed to exit at 30th Street and follow Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp back to westbound I-76 at Market Street. When the ramp to 30th Street is closed, motorists will be detoured to I-676 east, exit at 23rd Street, turn right on 23rd Street, then turn right on JFK Boulevard to 30th Street.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur during all of the scheduled activities. Westbound I-76 through motorists in New Jersey should take Interstate 676 west back to westbound I-76 or take Interstate 95 north to I-676 west back to westbound I-76.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signing, and relevant training.

PennDOT is repairing, resurfacing and replacing the median barrier on the I-76 viaduct under a $40 million contract. More information is available at www.i76viaduct.com.

Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Market Street. More information is available at www.chestnutstreetbridges.com.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT, PSP, AAA Remind Public of Pedestrian, Driver Safety Tips for Halloween throughout the Philadelphia Region

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT, PSP, AAA Remind Public of Pedestrian, Driver Safety Tips for Halloween throughout the Philadelphia Region

King of Prussia, PA – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and AAA Mid-Atlantic remind the public to take extra precautions this Halloween when out driving and walking in the Philadelphia region.

Motorists are urged to be extra cautious on Halloween and to look out for trick-or-treaters. Parents, guardians, and trick-or-treaters are reminded that costumes should be made visible to motorists with reflective tape or glow sticks. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, on average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than any other day of the year.

"COVID-19 will bring a different look to Halloween this year, but trick or treaters might still be traveling in neighborhoods and drivers need to use caution, slow down and always be aware of their surroundings," said PennDOT Safety Press Officer Robyn Briggs. "One child getting hurt on Halloween is one too many."

In 2019, 544 vehicle crashes occurred on Halloween statewide with 20 involving a pedestrian. The Philadelphia region saw 144 total crashes with 11 crashes involving a pedestrian.

Motorists are reminded to be extra cautious and practice safe driving behaviors to keep pedestrians and others safe by following these tips:
  • Do not drive impaired. If you are planning to venture out for the holiday and drink, plan and designate a sober driver, or use public transportation to get home safely. Social distancing activities and masks are recommended to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 when celebrating with members outside of your household.
  • Keep eyes on the road. Avoid distractions, such as cell phone use, eating and adjusting the radio.
  • Slow Down. If motorists are practicing safe speeds, they are more aware of their surroundings.
  • If you are out driving on Halloween night, you should be extra cautious, especially in residential neighborhoods where children may be out, who are not necessarily paying attention to you or your car.
If you are walking on Halloween, please remember these safety tips:
  • Practice social distancing and wear a cloth mask over your nose and mouth (recommended for children 2 years-old and up) to help prevent the spread of COVID;
  • If trick-or-treating, try to remain with members in your household only.
  • Carry a flashlight.
  • Place reflective tape on your costume, or wear a glow stick, so drivers can see you.
  • Walk on the sidewalk if one is available, or walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.
  • Never walk in between parked cars.
  • Always cross the street at a corner and look both ways before crossing.
PSP urge trick-or-treaters to be accompanied by an adult and make safety the forefront during this time "Do not walk distracted and put down your electronic device," said Trooper Jessica Tobin, Community Service Officer for the Pennsylvania State Police Media Station. "Always walk on sidewalks, when available.  If there is no sidewalk available, always walk facing traffic.  It is vital that pedestrians ensure that motorists on the roadway can see you. Utilizing these safety tips during this time, can greatly impact the amount of crashes that occur and ultimately decrease the amount of people getting hurt as a result."

Halloween festivities amid the COVID-19 pandemic will likely look different for many communities, parents, trick-or-treaters, and party goers, according to AAA. "For those venturing out to celebrate, AAA Mid-Atlantic urges parents to take the time to make trick-or-treaters and their costumes safer and more visible to motorists, as there is an increased risk of pedestrian crashes on Halloween night," said Jana L. Tidwell, manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic.  "In addition, motorists must eliminate distractions, slow down and watch for children, as well as have a completely sober designated driver if drinking is part of a Halloween celebration."
