PennDOT, Police, Safety Partners, Highlight Pedestrian Safety just ahead of Halloween
PennDOT, Police, Safety Partners, Highlight Pedestrian Safety just ahead of
Halloween
10/30/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Delaware County
Transportation Management Association, the Upper Darby Police Department,
and
AAA Mid-Atlantic, today held a media event at Charles Kelly Elementary
School
in Upper Darby Township, to highlight the importance of pedestrian safety
during Halloween.
Officials reminded trick-or-treaters and the parents accompanying them to
make
costumes safer and more visible to motorists, and stressed the importance
of
abiding by pedestrian and traffic safety rules. When out walking, obey
traffic
signals when crossing the street; walk on the sidewalk if one is available;
and
put down electronic devices, do not walk distracted.
According to Safe Kids Worldwide, on average, children are more than twice
as
likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than any other day of the
year.
In 2016, there were 67 total pedestrian related crashes on the weekend
prior
to, during, and following October 31. This is an increase from Halloween
2015's
total of 28.
If you are walking on Halloween, please remember PennDOT's following safety
tips:
• Trick-or-treat in a group instead of by yourself;
• Carry a flashlight;
• Place reflective tape on your costume so drivers can see you;
• Walk on the sidewalk if one is available, or walk on the left side of the
road, facing traffic;
• Never walk in between parked cars, and only visit homes with lights on;
• Always cross the streets at a corner and look both ways before crossing;
• Lift your mask while walking house to house.

Westbound JFK Boulevard Scheduled to Close Next Weekend for Bridge Rehabilitation in Philadelphia
Westbound JFK Boulevard Scheduled to Close Next Weekend for Bridge
Rehabilitation in Philadelphia
10/27/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
The westbound lanes of JFK Boulevard are scheduled to be closed and
detoured
between 20th Street and Schuylkill Avenue beginning Friday, November 3, at
9:00
PM, through 5:00 AM on Monday, November 6, for construction activities
related
to the rehabilitation of three structurally deficient bridges on JFK
Boulevard
over 21st, 22nd and 23rd streets in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania
Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
During the weekend closure, motorists will be directed to use 20th Street,
Market Street and Schuylkill Avenue.
The eastbound lanes of JFK Boulevard have been closed since the project
began
in late January. Eastbound JFK Boulevard motorists will continue to be
detoured
over Schuylkill Avenue, 30th Street, Market Street and 20th Street. The
eastbound lanes will remain closed through the completion of construction,
which is scheduled for August 2018.
Construction on the JFK Boulevard bridges is being performed one half at a
time
as the department's contractor replaces the deteriorated deck and beams on
the
three structurally-deficient, prestressed adjacent box-beam bridges. The
deteriorated bridge decks have been in place since the late 1950s.
In addition to replacing the bridge deck, crews are reconstructing JFK
Boulevard from the eastern end of the bridge over the Schuylkill River to
just
east of 21st Street, and widening the sidewalk on the south side to match
the
sidewalk built on the JFK Boulevard bridge over the Schuylkill River.
Crews are also building a new center median; reconstructing the westbound
sidewalk on JFK Boulevard to allow for a future multi-use trail;
constructing a
pedestrian stairway and ramp from the westbound sidewalk to 22nd Street;
and
installing new drainage, pavement markings and highway lighting.
Following the completion of construction, the eastbound single-lane pattern
on
JFK Boulevard will be extended from the bridge over the Schuylkill River to
just east of 21st Street.
C. Abbonizio Contractors, Inc., of Sewell, NJ, is the general contractor on
the
project which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
This project is a follow-up to the structural improvements made from 2007
to
2009 when PennDOT rehabilitated the JFK Boulevard bridge over the
Schuylkill
River under a $17.9 million project.

Governor Wolf Announces Thousands of Roadway Miles Paved, Hundreds of Bridge Projects Initiated this Year
Governor Wolf Announces Thousands of Roadway Miles Paved, Hundreds of
Bridge Projects Initiated this Year
10/27/2017-HARRISBURG
Governor Tom Wolf today announced that so far this year, roughly 2,100
roadway
miles were paved and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
(PennDOT)
has also put out contracts to preserve, repair, and replace more than 450
state-owned bridges and 18 locally owned bridges, and also completed 20
bridge
projects with department forces.
The announcement was made in conjunction with an event that PennDOT
Secretary
Leslie S. Richards held today discussing the department's progress with a
portion of the 12.5 miles of Interstate 76 that were recently paved in the
background.
"Our transportation network is critical to moving goods and people, and
we're
committed to continued quality and safety enhancements through our work and
partnerships with the private sector," Governor Wolf said. "We're putting
our
resources to work across the state, in rural and urban communities alike. I
promised my administration would deliver a government that works and
PennDOT is
making good on that."
During her media event, Richards noted that PennDOT has put out 588 total
project contracts worth nearly $1.9 billion so far this year. Richards also
noted that Governor Tom Wolf announced the department's Road Maintenance
and
Preservation, or Road MaP, initiative earlier this year which adds
additional
investments in roadway maintenance, especially on lower-traffic roadways,
as
well as the Interstate system.
The Road MaP investments will build on the department's investments across
the
state. Of the miles paved so far this year, more than 100 were on
Interstates
and more than 960 were on lower-traffic roadways with fewer than 2,000
vehicles
daily.
Across PennDOT's five-county District 6 region, more than 290 miles of
state
highway were resurfaced, 50 more than anticipated, and 39 bridges in Bucks,
Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties were repaired or
replaced.
"We would not have been able to successfully deliver this many critical
road
and bridge projects to the region without additional funding from Act 89,"
PennDOT District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain said. "Those extra dollars
went
directly into extending the service life of our highways and bridges,
improving
safety and strengthening our infrastructure."
For more information on projects occurring or being bid this year, those
made
possible by or accelerated by the state transportation funding plan (Act
89),
or those on the department's Four and Twelve Year Plans, visit
