PennDOT - District 6 News: More than 50 Police Departments across Southeast Pennsylvania to Target Aggressive Drivers during Statewide Mobilization

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

More than 50 Police Departments across Southeast Pennsylvania to Target Aggressive Drivers during Statewide Mobilization

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that more than 50 municipal police departments from Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties will join the Pennsylvania State Police in a coordinated aggressive driving enforcement wave to help reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities on area roadways as part of a statewide mobilization that runs through November 13.

The enforcement wave will focus on the Move Over Law, school bus safety, speeding, and tailgating. Motorists exhibiting other aggressive actions or unsafe behaviors may also be cited.

Law enforcement will use traffic enforcement zones, saturation patrols, speed enforcement details, corridor enforcement, work zone enforcement, and multi-jurisdictional patrol strategies to identify and cite aggressive drivers.

The enforcement is part of Pennsylvania's Highway Safety Program and is funded by part of PennDOT's investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

If you encounter an aggressive driver, PennDOT offers these tips:
  • Get out of their way and don't challenge them.
  • Stay relaxed, avoid eye contact, and ignore rude gestures.
  • Don't block the passing lane if you are driving slower than most of the traffic.
In 2021, 1,483 aggressive driving crashes resulted in 27 fatalities in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. Aggressive driving crashes are crashes involving at least two aggressive driving factors in the same crash. Factors include, but are not limited to, running stop signs or red lights, tailgating, careless turning or passing, and driving too fast for the conditions.

PennDOT's media center offers social-media-sized graphics highlighting topics such as aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving, and seat belts for organizations, community groups, or others who share safety information with their stakeholders.

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Safety Improvement Work on MacDade Boulevard in Ridley Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that paving, barrier replacement, and inlet cap installation will take place next week on MacDade Boulevard and the northbound Interstate 476 ramp to westbound MacDade Boulevard in Ridley Township, Delaware County, under a project to improve travel and safety on MacDade Boulevard and at the northbound I-476 and MacDade Boulevard Interchange.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

  • Monday, October 24, through Friday, October 28, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, periodic lane closures are scheduled in both directions on MacDade Boulevard between Bullens Lane and Fariview Road; and
  • Monday, October 24, through Friday, October 28, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a ramp closure is scheduled from northbound I-476 to westbound MacDade Boulevard. During the closure, motorists are directed to use eastbound MacDade Boulevard, Fairview Road, and Route 320 (Chester Road/Providence Road).

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this contract, PennDOT's contractor will construct a left turn lane on eastbound MacDade Boulevard at the Bullens Lane Intersection to help reduce potential rear-end crashes and improve sight lines for left turning vehicles. Traffic signals will also be modernized, and updated curb ramps will be installed at each quadrant of the intersection to meet current Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requirements.

In addition, two dynamic message boards will be mounted on steel columns, as well as CCTV cameras installed on traffic signals along MacDade Boulevard between Bullens Lane and Fairview Road to improve connectivity.

The project plan also involves improving the ramp from northbound I-476 to MacDade Boulevard by widening and realigning the westbound ramp where it approaches MacDade Boulevard to form a "T" intersection, where drivers will turn left or right onto MacDade Boulevard at a newly signalized intersection.

To help relieve traffic congestion, auxiliary lanes will be constructed on northbound I-476 within the existing roadway footprint just north of the MacDade Boulevard Interchange and just south of the U.S. 1 Interchange. Guiderail installations are also planned along sections of northbound I-476.

The existing pedestrian bridge over Crum Creek will also be removed and a new pedestrian bridge will be reconstructed with a new alignment adjacent to MacDade Boulevard.

Allan Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the $16.2 million project, which is financed with 80% federal funds and 20% state funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in summer 2026.

PennDOT to Reopen Betsy Ross Bridge Ramp to I-95 North Thursday in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the partially reconstructed ramp from the Betsy Ross Bridge to northbound Interstate 95 along with the ramp from southbound I-95 to Aramingo Avenue at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange in Philadelphia will reopen to traffic on Thursday, October 27. Both ramps were closed in December 2020.

The ramp from the Betsy Ross Bridge to northbound I-95 was closed as part of reconstruction of the ramp from the bridge to I-95 south and Aramingo Avenue. The upper section of the northbound ramp was rebuilt at its connection with the southbound ramp. The remainder of the northbound ramp will be rehabilitated during the next stage of the project (Section BR3) at the interchange scheduled for construction in 2024.

The ramp from southbound I-95 to Aramingo Avenue was also closed for construction of the overhead ramp from the bridge to southbound I-95 along with the ramp from Aramingo Avenue to southbound I-95. Both ramps remain under construction and closed until mid-2023. The two ramps merge before connecting with the southbound interstate.

In addition, the ramp from northbound I-95 to the Betsy Ross Bridge will close on Tuesday, October 25, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for a traffic shift. Traffic will be detoured to Aramingo Avenue then back to the bridge.

Work at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange is part of the $93.6 million Section BR2 project to reconstruct and improve the ramps between the Betsy Ross Bridge, Aramingo Avenue, and I-95.
