U.S. 422 East to Close Monday Night for Construction in Pottstown Area

Eastbound U.S. 422 will be closed and detoured from the split with Benjamin

Franklin Highway in Douglass Township, Berks County, to Route 100
(Pottstown
Pike) in North Coventry Township, Chester County, on Monday, December 18,
from
9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, for construction activities as
part
of a project to improve and reconstruct 1.2 miles of U.S. 422 from just
east of
the Schuylkill River bridge to just west of the Montgomery County line, the

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the overnight closure, eastbound U.S. 422 motorists will be directed
to
continue on Benjamin Franklin Highway/High Street and turn right on Route
100
South (Pottstown Pike) to access the ramp to eastbound U.S. 422.

In addition to the closure, long-term ramp closures have been put in place
for
westbound U.S. 422 motorists. Through fall 2019, the ramp from westbound
U.S.
422 to the Stowe Interchange has been closed and relocated about a
quarter-mile
west of the existing interchange. U.S. 422 motorists are being directed to

continue west and exit at the new temporary ramp to the Stowe Interchange.

The ramp from Grosstown Road at the Stowe Interchange to westbound U.S. 422
is
also closed through fall 2019. Grosstown Road motorists are being directed
to
take High Street/Benjamin Franklin Highway to access westbound U.S. 422.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work areas
because backups and slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are
weather
dependent.

Under this improvement project, PennDOT is reconstructing U.S. 422 on both
existing and new alignments; reconfiguring the U.S. 422/Stowe Interchange
to a
diamond configuration; removing and replacing the existing ramps and
culverts;
installing new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, message
boards, signing, pavement markings, lighting, concrete median barriers,
median
glare screens and guide rail; upgrading stormwater management facilities
and
pipes; and constructing and restoring wetlands.

H & K Group, Inc. of Schwenksville, Montgomery County, is the general
contractor on the $35,581,408 improvement project which is financed with
100
percent state funds from Act 89, Pennsylvania's Transportation Plan. The
entire
project is scheduled to be completed in late 2020.
