PennDOT Awarded Preservation Honors for Two Historic Bridges in Delaware, Bucks Counties
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is the winner of two 2022 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation awards for its rehabilitation of three Bryn Mawr Avenue bridges in Radnor Township, Delaware County, and the Main Street Bridge in Sellersville Borough, Bucks County.
"PennDOT is committed to preserving our historical bridges and we are honored to receive these distinguished awards," said PennDOT District 6 Executive Lou Belmonte. "These bridges help preserve architectural history and serve as a sense of pride and heritage for the communities."
The Bryn Mawr Avenue bridges project in Radnor Township was awarded the Ralph Modjeski Award for Excellence in Transportation Design, Preservation, and Archeology for the rehabilitation of the bridges that carry Bryn Mawr Avenue over Meadowbrook Run, a tributary to Meadowbrook Run, and Doom Run. All three structures were built in 1905, and the concrete steel beam bridge with decorative arched brick parapets over Meadowbrook Run is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
PennDOT's contractor rehabilitated the masonry arch structures and repaired the stone masonry abutment, dismantled the parapets, poured slab and concrete parapet core, faced the core wall with the existing brick and concrete cap to match the existing appearance, paved the roadway, and installed pavement markings and signs.
"This project successfully preserved a collection of historic bridges," said PennDOT District 6 Architectural Historian Monica Harrower. "All three bridges had deteriorated significantly and were in poor condition, requiring rehabilitation to extend their service life."
Built in 1927, the Main Street Bridge project over SEPTA-owned tracks in Sellersville Borough was awarded the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Award for Construction for the rehabilitation of the 95-year-old single-span Pratt truss structure. The bridge is individually eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
"This preservation helped maintain the historic character of the Sellersville Historic District, while upgrading the structure to serve modern transportation needs and the community," said Harrower.
Loftus Construction, Inc., of Cinnaminson, NJ, was the general contractor on both projects, which were financed with state and federal funds.
