22nd Street and 23rd Street Scheduled to Close Overnight for Bridge
Rehabilitation in Philadelphia
8/23/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
22nd Street and 23rd Street are scheduled to be closed and detoured between
Arch Street and Market Street for one night as part of a major improvement
project to rehabilitate three structurally deficient bridges on JFK
Boulevard
over 21st, 22nd and 23rd streets in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania
Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
The work schedule is:
• Thursday, August 24, from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM the next morning, 22nd
Street
will be closed between Arch Street and Market Street for deck pouring.
Motorists will be directed to use Market Street, 20th Street and Arch
Street;
and
• Tuesday, August 29, from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM the next morning, 23rd
Street
will be closed between Arch Street and Market Street for deck pouring.
Motorists will be detoured over Race Street, 21st Street and Market Street.
The eastbound lanes of JFK Boulevard have been closed since the project
began
in late January. Eastbound JFK Boulevard motorists will continue to be
detoured
over Schuylkill Avenue, 30th Street, Market Street and 20th Street. The
eastbound lanes will remain closed through the completion of construction,
which is scheduled for August 2018.
Construction on the JFK Boulevard bridges is being performed one half at a
time
as the department's contractor replaces the deteriorated deck and beams on
the
three structurally-deficient, prestressed adjacent box-beam bridges. The
deteriorated bridge decks have been in place since the late 1950s.
In addition to replacing the bridge deck, crews are reconstructing JFK
Boulevard from the eastern end of the bridge over the Schuylkill River to
just
east of 21st Street, and widening the sidewalk on the south side to match
the
sidewalk built on the JFK Boulevard bridge over the Schuylkill River.
Crews are also building a new center median; reconstructing the westbound
sidewalk on JFK Boulevard to allow for a future multi-use trail;
constructing a
pedestrian stairway and ramp from the westbound sidewalk to 22nd Street;
and
installing new drainage, pavement markings and highway lighting.
Following the completion of construction, the eastbound single-lane pattern
on
JFK Boulevard will be extended from the bridge over the Schuylkill River to
just east of 21st Street.
C. Abbonizio Contractors, Inc., of Sewell, NJ, is the general contractor on
the
project which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
This project is a follow-up to the structural improvements made from 2007
to
2009 when PennDOT rehabilitated the JFK Boulevard bridge over the
Schuylkill
River under a $17.9 million project.
