Wolf Administration Announces Reopening of Eastbound JFK Boulevard as Bridge Rehabilitation Project Nears Completion

Philadelphia, PA – The Wolf Administration announced the reopening of eastbound John F. Kennedy (JFK) Boulevard today in Philadelphia as the project to rehabilitate three bridges carrying the state highway over 21st Street, 22nd Street and 23rd Street nears completion.

"With the rehabilitation of these bridges, Pennsylvania is continuing its progress on improving regional and statewide bridge conditions," said Governor Tom Wolf. "Maintaining roads and bridges is an important part of extending the life of our robust transportation network."

The project was driven by the need to rehabilitate the three JFK Boulevard bridges listed in poor condition. In addition to the bridge repairs, the project included a complete reconstruction of the JFK Boulevard pavement and drainage systems, sidewalk widening, new LED lighting systems and traffic signal upgrades at the intersection of JFK Boulevard and 20th Street.

Landscaping improvements for green stormwater management and the installation of a new pedestrian access structure connecting westbound JFK Boulevard to 22nd Street will also be completed under this project.

While major construction on the bridges is completed, the contractor will be performing various minor construction activities over the next few weeks with minimal impact to traffic. Weather, permitting, the contractor expects the entire project to be completed in late December.

C. Abbonizio Contractors, Inc., of Sewell, NJ is the general contractor on the $16,526,739 project which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
