I-76 West Full Closure at Night Next Week for Rehabilitation of Two Viaducts in Center City Philadelphia
King of Prussia, PA – Several travel restrictions will be in place at night next week on eastbound and westbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Center City Philadelphia for construction on the viaduct between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges and on the viaduct carrying Schuylkill Avenue over the expressway between Walnut Street and Market Street, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
Weather permitting, the work schedule is:
- Monday, March 2, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the westbound I-76 ramp to 30th Street will be closed for concrete placement. Ramp traffic will be detoured west on I-76 to eastbound Interstate 676, exit at 23rd Street, turn left on 23rd Street, then left on the ramp to westbound I-676, back to eastbound I-76 to the ramp to 30th Street;
- Monday, March 2, through Thursday, March 5, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, eastbound or westbound I-76 may be reduced periodically to a single lane at locations between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges for placement of construction zone signs and pavement repairs;
- Wednesday, March 4, and Thursday, March 5, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and Interstate 676 interchanges from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, then closed completely each night from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM for demolition of the overhead viaduct. During the overnight closure, westbound I-76 traffic will exit at 30th Street and continue on Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp to westbound I-76 at Market Street; and
- If any of the weeknight activities are cancelled due to weather, westbound I-76 will be restricted to a single lane at 9:00 PM Friday, March 6, and then closed completely from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM Saturday, March 7.
PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the I-76 viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken Borough, just east of the Interstate 476/Conshohocken Interchange in Montgomery County. More information is available at www.I76viaduct.com.
Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is closed until August 2020 for repairs — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street.
