PennDOT to Begin Route 73 (Skippack Pike) Intersection Improvement Project in Whitpain Township
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that preliminary construction will begin next week to reconstruct the intersection of Route 73 (Skippack Pike) at Wentz Road and Parkwood Road in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County.
Construction activities will start on Monday, February 10 with no impact to traffic. On Monday, February 17, through late March, Route 73 (Skippack Pike) will be reduced to a single lane with flagging weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM between Crestline Drive and Cathcart Road in Whitpain Township for clearing and utility relocation. After March, periodic daytime travel restrictions will be in place on Route 73 (Skippack Pike) as needed by the contractor through the end of construction scheduled for the end of 2020.
Once utility relocation is completed this spring, Parkwood Road at Route 73 (Skippack Pike) will be closed and detoured for intersection reconstruction. When the closure is in place, drivers will be directed to use Route 73 (Skippack Pike), Crestline Drive and Ardway Road.
Under this improvement project, PennDOT will realign Wentz Road to provide a four-way intersection with Route 73 (Skippack Pike) and Parkwood Road; mill and overlay of the travel lanes; perform full-depth widening of the existing shoulder on Route 73 (Skippack Pike) from Jackson Avenue to Cathcart Road to provide dedicated left turn lanes at the Wentz Road/Parkwood Road intersection; install an underground concrete stormwater management system at Route 73 (Skippack Pike) and Wentz Road; perform drainage improvements; install new ADA curb ramps, signals, signing and pavement markings; and relocate utilities.
Road-Con Inc. of West Chester, Chester County is the general contractor on the $3,670,656 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
The project is a critical part of a multi-phase program to reconstruct, widen and improve travel on a 9.1-mile section of U.S. 202 and selected intersections between Johnson Highway in Norristown and Route 309 in Montgomery Township. The first mainline section from Route 309 to Hancock Road was completed in 2012. Construction is ongoing on the second and third mainline sections from Township Line Road to Morris Road and from Morris Road to Swedesford Road.
