PennDOT to Begin Project to Rehabilitate and Repair 11 Miles of I-95 in Delaware County
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Monday, April 13, on a project to rehabilitate pavement and repair 15 structures on more than 11 miles of Interstate 95 from the Delaware state line to just north of the Route 420 Interchange in Lower Chichester, Upper Chichester, Chester, Ridley and Tinicum townships, the City of Chester and Upland and Ridley boroughs, Delaware County.
"This is another example of our investment and commitment to addressing the growing needs of Pennsylvania's aging interstates," PennDOT District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain said. "The improvements constructed under this project will extend the life of this critical corridor and enhance the overall safety of the highway."
Normal highway and bridge construction projects in Pennsylvania remain paused as part of the commonwealth's efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. This project is part of critical work that continues statewide addressing safety needs and work needed to eliminate roadway restrictions that could impede the ability for the movement of life sustaining goods and services.
Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will mill, overlay and rehabilitate the existing concrete pavement including 41 ramps; perform minor structural repairs to 15 of the 33 bridges located in the project limits; repair sections of median barrier; upgrade guide rail; install new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips; repair and clean existing inlets and pipes; and replace damaged or missing traffic signs. The Pennsylvania Welcome Center just north of the Delaware state line also will be improved with concrete base repairs and new parking stripes, pavement markings and signs.
Beginning, Monday, April 13, work will begin at the Pennsylvania Welcome Center which has been closed since March 17 in response to Governor Tom Wolf's mitigation guidance regarding COVID-19 to ensure that proper safety and sanitation protocols were in place.
When work begins on mainline I-95, most construction activities will take place during off-peak hours (evenings and overnight). There may be some daytime traffic restrictions; however, all lanes must be open during peak travel times.
Allan A. Myers, Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $68,378,777 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to be completed in late 2023.
