PennDOT to Begin U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) Improvement Project in Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin next week on a $99.4 million project to reconstruct, widen, and improve travel and safety on a 1.4-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) in Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County.
This project will reconstruct and widen the two-lane section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) to four travel lanes, and upgrade traffic signals from just east of Chelsea Parkway/Bethel Avenue to just east of Route 452 (Market Street).
This improvement project also includes:
- Widening to add turn lanes and realigning the Cherry Tree/Bethel Avenue Intersection.
- Reconstructing and reconfiguring the U.S. 322/Route 452 (Market Street) Interchange and adding turn lanes and ramps from a widened Bethel Avenue.
- Reconstructing the pavement and widening the shoulders of the four-lane, barrier-separated segment of U.S. 322 from east of Cherry Tree Road to the approach at the CSX bridge at Bethel Road.
Beginning Monday, October 21, preliminary construction activities will get underway with utility work, site clearing, and temporary paving in preparation for the start of large-scale construction operations beginning in 2025. Motorists will not encounter major travel restrictions or disruptions during the early construction activities.
During the various stages of the anticipated five years of construction, one lane of traffic will be maintained at all times on eastbound and westbound U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway).
R.E. Pierson Construction Co. Inc., of Pilesgrove, N.J., is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
This project is the second of four construction contracts under PennDOT's U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) Improvement Program to improve travel and safety on a 6.7-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) in Concord, Bethel, and Upper Chichester townships.
The first section to widen and improve U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) and the intersections between U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) and Clayton Park Drive in Concord Township, was completed in 2020.
Section CSX, which will replace the U.S. 322 bridge over the CSX Railroad and improve the adjacent Bethel Road Interchange, is scheduled to be advertised for construction later this year.
Final engineering design is advancing for the fourth section to reconstruct and widen U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from Clayton Park Drive to Chelsea Parkway/Bethel Avenue in Upper Chichester and Bethel townships.
