PennDOT to Close 21st Street in Philadelphia for Bridge Demolition

PennDOT to Close 21st Street in Philadelphia for Bridge Demolition

2/16/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced
that
21st Street will be closed and detoured between Arch Street and Market
Street
in Philadephia from 10:00 PM Thursday, February 17, through 6:00 AM Monday,

February 20, for overhead bridge demolition.

During construction, 21st Street through traffic will be detoured over Arch

Street, 23rd Street and Market Street. Motorists are advised to allow extra

time when traveling through the area. Local access will be maintained up to
the
construction zone.

The work is part of PennDOT's $15.8 million project to rehabilitate three
structurally deficient bridges on John F. Kennedy (JFK) Boulevard over
21st,
22nd and 23rd streets in Philadelphia.
Construction began January 23.

Construction on the JFK Boulevard bridges will be performed one half at a
time
as the department's contractor replaces the deteriorated deck and beams on
the
three structurally-deficient, prestressed adjacent box-beam bridges. The
deteriorated bridge decks have been in place since the late 1950s.

The eastbound JFK Boulevard travel lanes continue to be closed and detoured

between 20th Street and Schuylkill Avenue through the completion of
construction scheduled for August 2018. The westbound lanes are open to
traffic.

During construction, eastbound JFK Boulevard motorists are being detoured
over
Schuylkill Avenue, 30th Street, Market Street and 20th Street.

In addition to replacing the bridge deck, crews will reconstruct JFK
Boulevard
from the eastern end of the bridge over the Schuylkill River to just east
of
21st Street, and widen the sidewalk on the south side to match the sidewalk

built on the JFK Boulevard bridge over the Schuylkill River.

Crews will also build a new center median; reconstruct the westbound
sidewalk
on JFK Boulevard to allow for a future multi-use trail; construct a
pedestrian
stairway and ramp from the westbound sidewalk to 22nd Street; and install
new
drainage, pavement markings and highway lighting.

Following the completion of construction, the eastbound single-lane pattern
on
JFK Boulevard will be extended from the bridge over the Schuylkill River to

just east of 21st Street.

C. Abbonizio Contractors, Inc., of Sewell, NJ, is the general contractor on
the
$15,884,978 project which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

This project is a follow up to the structural improvements made from 2007
to
2009 when PennDOT rehabilitated the JFK Boulevard bridge over the
Schuylkill
River under a $17.9 million project.
