Honorable Robert C. Donatucci Memorial Bridge on Passyunk Avenue to Close This Weekend for Final Testing in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Passyunk Avenue will be closed and detoured between 61st Street and 28th Street in Philadelphia from 7:00 PM tonight, October 12, to 5:00 AM Monday, October 15, for final testing on the Honorable Robert C. Donatucci Memorial Bridge over the Schuylkill River, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the weekend operation, westbound Passyunk Avenue through traffic will be detoured over 26th Street, Route 291 (Penrose Avenue/Island Avenue), Bartram Avenue, and Essington Avenue. Eastbound Passyunk Avenue drivers will be detoured over Island Avenue, Route 291 (Penrose Avenue/Island Avenue), Interstate 76 east, Broad Street (Route 611) and I-76 west to the Passyunk Avenue exit.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

This testing operation will complete work on a $33.5 million project to rehabilitate and improve the 18-span drawbridge by enhancing the structure's mechanical operation and condition of the bridge. PennDOT's contractor rehabilitated the motors, brakes, locks and gears; upgraded the electrical system, traffic control systems and gates; repaired and painted the structural steel; replaced deteriorated concrete; overlaid the bridge deck with latex concrete; replaced expansion joints; reset rocker bearings; repaired pedestrian railings; and cleaned and repaired drainage systems.

Built in 1983, the steel-girder bridge is 2,240 feet long and 92 feet wide. The structure carries an average of 20,800 vehicles a day.

Buckley and Company Inc., of Philadelphia, is the general contractor on the project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
