I-76 Lane, Ramp Closures Planned This Weekend for Bridge Expansion Joint Repair in Montgomery County

King of Prussia, PA –  Weather permitting, Interstate 76 motorists will encounter ramp and lane closures this weekend for bridge expansion joint repair on several structures as part of a major improvement project to repair and resurface 12.5 miles of I-76 in Upper Merion Township, West Conshohocken Borough and Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The work schedule is:
  • Friday, October 26, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 AM Saturday, October 27, the left lane will close on westbound I-76 from Croton Road to just east of the U.S. 202 Interchange where the second left lane (express lanes) will close to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. When the double lane closure is in place, motorists will be directed to use the I-76 West collector road to reach the Pennsylvania Turnpike; 
  • Saturday, October 27, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 AM Sunday, October 28, the left lane will close on eastbound I-76 between North Gulph Road and Croton Road; and
  • Sunday, October 28, through Thursday, November 1, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the ramp from westbound I-76 to Conshohocken (Route 23) will close as needed. During the overnight closure, motorists will be directed to continue west on I-76, exit at Gulph Mills (Route 320), and turn right onto Trinity Road/Holstein Road/Swedeland Road to access eastbound Route 23.
Several I-76/U.S. 202 Interchange ramps will also be closed and detoured at night next week for pavement restoration. The work schedule is:

Sunday, October 28, and Monday, October 29, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM:
  • I-76 West ramp to U.S. 202 South and U.S. 422 West will be closed. Motorists will be directed to continue on I-76 West to Mall Boulevard, turn right on Mall Boulevard, left on North Gulph Road and right on U.S. 202 South to access U.S. 422 West; 
  • U.S. 202 South ramp to I-76 East and U.S. 422 West will be closed. Motorists will be directed to continue south and exit at Route 252 (Valley Forge Road) and follow signs back to U.S. 202 North to I-76 East/U.S. 422 West; and
  • U.S. 202 South/North Gulph Road to I-76 West will be closed and detoured. Southbound U.S. 202 motorists will be directed to follow signs to I-76 East, U.S. 202 North and I-76 West. North Gulph Road motorists will use U.S. 202 South and follow signs to I-76 East, U.S. 202 North and I-76 West.
Tuesday, October 30, and Wednesday, October 31, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM:
  • I-76 West ramp to U.S. 202 South and U.S. 422 West will be closed. Motorists will be directed to continue on I-76 West to Mall Boulevard, turn right on Mall Boulevard, left on North Gulph Road and right on U.S. 202 South to access U.S. 422 West; 
  • I-76 East ramp to U.S. 202 South and U.S. 422 West will be closed. Motorists will be directed to continue on I-76 East exit at U.S. 202 North and take the ramp to I-76 West to Mall Boulevard, turn right on Mall Boulevard, left on North Gulph Road and right on U.S. 202 South to access U.S. 422 West; and
  • U.S. 202 South ramp to I-76 East and U.S. 422 West will be closed. Motorists will be directed to continue south and exit at Route 252 (Valley Forge Road) and follow signs back to U.S. 202 North to I-76 East/U.S. 422 West.
Friday, November 2, and Saturday, November 3, from 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM:
  • I-76 East ramp to U.S. 202 North will be closed. Motorists will be directed to continue on I-76 East, exit at Gulph Mills and take South Gulph Road to U.S. 202 North;
  • I-76 West ramp to US 202 North will be closed. Motorists will be directed to continue on I-76 West, exit at Mall Boulevard and continue to North Gulph Road to access U.S. 202 North; and
  • U.S. 202 North ramp to I-76 West will be closed. Motorists will be directed to continue on U.S. 202 North, make a right on South Gulph Road and follow signs for I-76 West.
Periodic single lane closures are also scheduled on I-76 in both directions between the U.S. 202 and U.S. 1 (City Avenue) interchanges on Sunday, October 28, through Thursday, November 1, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, and Friday, November 2, and Saturday, November 3, from 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM the following morning.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this improvement project, PennDOT is milling, overlaying and rehabilitating existing pavement; performing base repairs; installing new guide rail; repairing or replacing damaged traffic signs, two overhead sign structures and numerous expansion joints on three structures; and installing rumble strips, delineators and new mileage markers along the four-lane section of I-76.

The resurfacing of mainline I-76 in Montgomery County was completed in October 2017, while work on the entire project will finish this fall.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County is the general contractor on the $24.7 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
