NWS Weather Briefing - Extreme Cold

Emergency Management Partners and Stakeholders:

 Please review the attached weather briefing from the US National Weather Service in Mount Holly, NJ regarding the exceptionally cold temperatures expected for Chester County Thursday December 15th and Friday December 16th. Additionally, sleet and snow may occur sometime over the weekend; however there is still much uncertainty regarding when and how much. Here are the details:

Chester County Forecasted Conditions:

·        Anticipated Timing: Thursday, 12/15/16 and Friday, 12/12/16

·        Duration: 2 days

·        Wind speeds: winds 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph

·        Extremely cold temperatures with wind chills in the single digits

·        Precipitation: a mix of snow, freezing rain, and sleet possible over the weekend

·        Active watches & warnings: None at this time

 Impacts:

  • Cold temperatures can threaten the lives of vulnerable populations without access to shelter.

 Recommended Preparedness Actions:

  • Follow the NWS and local weather forecasts throughout the weekend for the latest changes, updates, and information.
  • Identify Comfort (Warming) Centers that are available in your community.

DES Actions:

·        We will continue to monitor this event and provide additional information as it becomes available.

·        The Watch Officer is available through the 9-1-1 Operations Center by calling 610-344-5100

·        The EOC is currently not expected to be activated for this event.

 It is unknown at this time it additional briefings will be generated.  If there are changes to the forecast, we will distribute any briefing packages as soon as we have had an opportunity to analyze the impacts for Chester County.
