PennDOT Reopened Route 401 Bridge over Branch of Pickering Creek in West
Vincent Township, Chester County

The Route 401 bridge (Conestoga Road) at the intersection of St. Mathews
Road
in West Vincent Township, Chester County, reopened Friday afternoon,
December
2, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said today.

Construction began Monday, October 24, 2016, to rehabilitate the
structurally-deficient, one-span stone masonry arch bridge. The Route 401
(Conestoga Road) bridge was restricted to one lane on April 21, 2016, due
to
structural damage resulting from a vehicle striking a bridge sidewall.

PennDOT's contractor removed and reconstructed the stone masonry sidewalls,

installed new lightweight concrete fill in the arch, and resurfaced the
Route
401(Conestoga Road) and St. Matthews Road Intersection. The bridge is no
longer
classified as structurally deficient.

Built in 1870, the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) bridge is 11 feet long and 42

feet wide. The structure carries 7,416 vehicles a day.

The rehabilitation of the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) bridge was part of
PennDOT's $6.8 million project to rehabilitate four structurally-deficient
bridges in Bucks and Montgomery counties, three structurally-deficient
culverts
in Bucks County, and to stabilize a stream embankment at a bridge in Bucks
County. The cost to rehabilitate the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) bridge is
approximately $300,000.

This transportation improvement project is financed with 100 percent state
funds from Act 89, Pennsylvania's transportation plan.

All work on the project is scheduled to be completed in late 2018. The
general
contractor is Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J.
