Excessive Heat Warning

This is an important message from ReadyPhiladelphia.

Excessive Heat Warning in effect from 12PM 8/11 until 6PM 8/13. Drink plenty of fluids. Check on relatives and neighbors.

* Heat index values... 100 to 105 degrees each afternoon, with the
highest values both Friday and Saturday afternoon.

* Timing... the heat index values will peak mostly during the 2 PM
to 5 PM time frame each day, although a few thunderstorms each
day could bring some local temporary relief. The excessive heat
may continue on Sunday and therefore this warning could later be
  extended.

* Impacts... there is an increased risk for heat related health
issues... especially for the elderly... those with chronic health
problems such as lung and heart disease... those working
outdoors... and other heat sensitive groups of people.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot
temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous
situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of
fluids... stay in an air-conditioned room... stay out of the sun...
and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstances. During warm or hot weather... car
interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions... if you work or spend time outside. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work... the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency... call 9 1 1.
