PennDOT to Resume Construction on Project to Rehabilitate Eight Bridges in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery Counties

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will resume Sunday, May 7, on the project to rehabilitate eight bridges in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery Counties.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, and relevant training.

Beginning Thursday, May 7, through late-August, construction will resume on the bridge carrying Route 252 (Bear Hill Road) over Norfolk Southern Railroad in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County. During construction, northbound and southbound lanes on Route 252 (Bear Hill Road) between Hilltop Road and Heatherstone Drive will be reduced to a single lane. The anticipated completion date for this bridge rehabilitation is fall 2020. 

Built in 1974, the Route 252 (Bear Hill Road) bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad is 157 feet long and 72 feet wide, which carries an average of 18,105 vehicles a day.

Beginning, Monday, May 11, construction will begin on the bridge carrying Route 563 (Mountain View Drive) over Saw Mill Road in Haycock Township, Bucks County. Due to the nature of repairs, Route 563 (Mountain View Drive) will be closed and detoured 24/7 between Harrisburg School Road and Buck Run Drive.

During the closure, which is scheduled through late June, Route 563 (Mountain View Drive) motorists will be directed to use Durham Road. Eastern Road, South Park Road, North Ridge Road and Route 313 (West Dublin Pike). Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

Built in 1972, the Route 563 (Mountain View Drive) bridge over Saw Mill Road is 123 feet long and 48 feet wide, which carries an average of 4,480 vehicles a day.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

PennDOT's contractor will rehabilitate the structures by adding concrete overlay to the bridge decks; performing concrete substructure repairs; replacing and resealing the bridge deck joints; installing scour rock protection; and slope wall repair.

The structures are two of eight bridges in Bucks, Chester, and Montgomery counties that PennDOT is repairing under a $4,475,284 project financed with 100 percent state funds.

Structures completed under this project include:

• Stonybrook Road over Jericho Creek in Upper Makefield Township, Bucks County; 
• South Sugan Road over Aquetong Creek in New Hope Borough, Bucks County;
• Big Oak Road over I-295 in Middletown Township, Bucks County; and
• Park Road over U.S. 1 in West Nottingham Township, Chester County.

The other structures included in this bridge rehabilitation project include:

• Cat Hill Road over Perkiomen Creek in West Rockhill Township, Bucks County; and
• Morris Road over SEPTA in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County.

Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Chester County, is the general contractor on the bridge improvement project. Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in late 2020.
